In Washington, on the same day that Robert’s future was shown to be in jeopardy, Senator Arthur Watkins headed the special Senate committee that called unanimously for Senator Joseph McCarthy’s censure.

While the tide is about to recede, Robert has to contend with the undertow.

Soon St. John’s Swiss residence permit expires. He writes to Berne, explaining he is the victim of something known as McCarthyism. They’ve heard about it before. He tells them his permit has been lifted; that no specific charge has been made against him; that as soon as he can obtain a specific charge he will respond to it; meanwhile, he wishes to have political asylum in Switzerland. Within a few days they respond; St. John can remain in Switzerland until his passport is returned.

There are other consequences: having no passport means St. John cannot leave Switzerland, and therefore he can no longer lecture. This is the principle source of his income. His savings are dwindling rapidly.

St. John is desperate. He writes identical letters to twelve liberal American friends. Several are in Congress; several are lawyers. He solicits their help in getting the State Department to advise him of their charges.

The wait is excruciating. Slowly, responses to St. John’s request for written assistance from his friends dribble in:

To whom it may concern (TWIMC): “In all this time I have never had any reason to believe that he was a card-carrying Communist, an intellectual Communist, or a fellow-traveler. It is true that he was a loyal supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s, a confirmed liberal, and a champion of the underdog.”
