Adrian couldn’t stop it.

His own hands were pressed to Coryn’s head, and Coryn writhed weakly on the table, body glowing with unholy light. He didn’t have the strength to even try to escape; whatever Raithe had drugged him with had taken all the fight out of him.

But he could still scream.

God, could he scream.

Adrian wanted to slap his hands over his ears. He wanted to yell at Kai, make him see, make him help. Wanted to scream for Eredwyn…

But no matter how hard he fought, he could do nothing but watch Coryn twist in agony and listen to his ragged screams.

Raithe was so deeply focused, he was ignoring Adrian completely.

Was this the moment he’d been waiting for?

Could he distract Raithe enough to make it all go wrong?

The thought had only just crossed his mind when the power of the channeling drilled through the shield surrounding Blackstone and slammed into him. Adrian’s senses were engulfed in a dizzying rush, a high like nothing he’d ever felt before. Better than any drug he’d ever tried…

Like a riptide, the current dragged him under. Everything else was forgotten as his mind drifted, reveling in sensation.

A desperate scream tore him out of it, jolting him back to reality.

Coryn lay on the table, tears streaming from his eyes, sweat-soaked body shuddering with hoarse, broken sobs.

Coryn.

On the table.

Shit.

It took every shred of will Adrian had to hold himself back from the torrent of power. He wanted it so bad. Wanted that feeling, wanted the high…

Reached for it without thinking, just as another agonized scream sliced through his awareness. “Adrian, please… help me!”

That scream snapped him out of it.

Coryn was in pain. Coryn, who had never been anything but kind to him. And Raithe was going to use Coryn’s pain to kill Adrian.

No!

Resolve crystallizing, Adrian turned his attention to Raithe. Not without a fight, asshole…

He kept his determination — and his thoughts — to himself as he watched Raithe drink in the raw power pouring into him. Coryn’s body blazed in the mythe as all the fires of hell poured through him, magnifying the native mythe-energy a thousandfold.

Could Adrian touch that power?

Use it, even?

The thought sickened him. Using the power drawn through Coryn’s body made him as bad as Raithe.

But if it gave him the strength to drive Raithe out and stop the pain, maybe Coryn would forgive him.

He’d have to be careful; it would be too easy to get lost in the high. If he lost himself again, that high might be the last thing he felt before Raithe ended him.

He focused on the river of power, reached for it—

—and a resounding crash shattered his concentration.

“Adrian, stop!” a voice commanded.

Eredwyn’s voice, but stronger and more commanding than Adrian had ever heard it.

Raithe laughed and started to lash out at Eredwyn. Before he could let loose, Adrian threw caution to the wind, dove into the stream of power and wrenched it savagely away from Raithe. The torrent of molten fire crashed through him, burning him. There was no high this time; it was like hitting a wall of flame at a hundred miles an hour.
