SNAPSHOT #22

Saturday, February 15, 9:55 p.m.

Pennyworth House

Oona recovers herself on Mr. Worth’s front porch as you watch from a safe distance: after the briefest cry, she smoothed her hair, vigorously brushed away her tears, and marched into the night. The glimpse into her softer, more vulnerable side was closed, possibly forever. You’d done nothing, afraid of having her rage redirected your way. Was it the right decision? Well, hard to say. Not the bravest, but perhaps the safest.

Now you and Walter are back in your dorm room, cozied up in your usual Casablanca-watching spots: you on the couch with a blanket draped over you; Walter in his favorite chair, feet propped on the coffee table.

“Scrabble?” Walter suggests. The two of you have a running game. You nod and grab the board from the bookshelf, setting it up between you.

You and Walter both look up at the distant wail of fire truck sirens.

“Weird,” Walter says. “That’s a sound you don’t hear much around here.”

“Or ever.” You pull a blanket around your shoulders. “Hope it’s nothing serious.” Oona pops back into your head. She may be a bully, but it’s not like she’d actually do something to hurt Worth’s Other Woman. Right?

Of course not. Don’t be ridiculous.

The two of you refocus on your Scrabble game. “You almost closed the gap in our last game,” Walter says, looking at the score sheet. He’s always winning—it’s just a matter of by how much. As he sets up the board and dispenses letters, you rummage around for a pen to keep tally, but can’t find one in the box. So you head over to Spider’s desk, opening her top drawer to find one.

Your hand grazes a stack of math exams, and you can’t help but notice the grades on them. A. A+. A. That’s odd. You and Spider are both taking pre-calc this year with Mr. Paluschka, and you know she’s been struggling. You’ve spent several late nights trying to help her get up to speed. So you’re surprised—if not a little shocked—to see she’s doing so well. Why wouldn’t she have told you?

Then you notice the names at the top of the exams—none of them are Spider’s. They date back several years, too, but you recognize test questions from exams you’ve taken recently. Your stomach sinks. Could Spider be cheating? There’s a strict honor code at Kings, and she certainly doesn’t seem like the type to break it—but then again, you know she’s been stressed about keeping her B− average, a requisite for keeping her athletic scholarship.

Not wanting to bring Walter into the drama, you quickly grab a pen, slam the drawer shut, and return to the common room couch.
