Garrick turned from the window of his office, a maelstrom of emotions whirling in his chest, after watching Lyra’s car disappear down the driveway and through his estate’s gates.
Sebastian sat on the edge of his desk. His demeanor had evolved from pure rage to smug satisfaction, but Garrick could still sense that Sebastian wouldn’t leave until he got what he’d come here for: Peterson’s location. The chance to wound Garrick, to gut him so deeply, had just been a sick bonus for his brother.
“What were you going to do with it?” he asked quietly, already feeling the loss of Lyra. The house already seemed quieter, more lonely than it had been before.
His brother grinned. “Do with what?”
“The diamond,” Garrick said. Something Lyra had said the night before floated into his mind as he stared at his brother.
If you didn’t love him then you wouldn’t be doing this. You simply wouldn’t care. You’d be indifferent. Not angry.
Garrick didn’t feel his usual hatred for his brother. He felt nothing now. Somehow, this was worse than Sebastian locking him in that cage all those years ago. This hurt him even more.
Sebastian’s answer was easy. “I was going to use it as payment for a hit on Peterson.”
That didn’t make sense to Garrick. “You have enough money to pay for it on your own.”
Sebastian’s eyes flashed, a remnant of the anger he’d locked away bubbling up to the surface. “It felt more fitting,” he spat. “I wanted to use the diamond, something that was hers, to end the life of the man who took hers. The chance to steal from you was just a bonus.”
Garrick almost laughed. “You really think she would’ve wanted that? You really think that she would’ve wanted her eldest son to be a murderer?”
“What does it matter?” Sebastian returned, eyes narrowed. “Her husband was one, after all. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”
Garrick pinched the bridge of his nose. “And tell me how she played a role in all of this?”
“Little Lyra?” Sebastian asked, his voice sounding like worn velvet, lips curling. “Did you enjoy my gift?”
“Tell me,” Garrick grated, fists clenching at his sides. Maybe he wasn’t all that indifferent after all, because all he could think about right now was punching his older brother across his smug fucking face.
Sebastian’s shrug was almost as infuriating as his smirk. “Her brother gambles. I loaned him money and when he couldn’t pay up, she came to me. We struck a deal. If she got me the diamond, I would forget about the debt and leave her brother alone. It was as simple as that.”
“How much?” he asked through a clenched jaw. “How much did he owe you?”
He already knew the answer before Sebastian said, “$120,000.”
Garrick closed his eyes, blowing out a breath. “I’ll pay you the money,” he murmured. “But you will never bother them again.”
Sebastian folded his arms. “This isn’t about that money anymore. I won’t go near either of them again if you tell me where Peterson is right now.
