The Waiting

You've jumped into the deep end. Will you swim or drown?

Mara tossed and turned. Each hour passed by in an endless loop. What had she been thinking, trusting a teenager? So many things could go wrong.

Her head threatened to explode under the weight of processing them all.

Mara sat up and massaged her sore neck, staring at the nightlight from the hallway outside, filtering in through the gaps in the door.

Mallory lay curled in the fetal position on the mattress, her sleeping face the epitome of calm. She had no qualms about the coming operation. Why didn’t she have doubts?

No good space pirate would show them. Mara wouldn’t either.

Mara tried again, letting the thoughts about how much was at stake pass through, refusing to engage with them. It didn’t work. Her mind didn’t stop replaying the previous day’s events.

Mara resisted the urge to slam her fist into the wall. Numbing the pain with physical hurt would only make it worse.

Forcing herself to lie down again, Mara stared up at the ceiling, counting the scratch marks on the otherwise polished stone. What a story it might hold.

Mara didn’t know what she’d do if they were caught. She could only imagine the horrible things that would happen.

Mara had never been spiritual. In the crushing silence of contemplating the unknown, she could understand why people believed something was watching over them.

It was comforting, a refuge from the madness of your head.

She ignored such thoughts and tried to sort out the conflicting ideas about the escape. She knew it must work, but only saw terrible outcomes.

There was no way out of the labyrinth of uncertainty but to accept whatever came.

She hated to admit it, but she was desperate enough to try anything. They’d kept her caged for long enough. The new resolve quietened her mind, and she rested.
