Chapter Twelve
Ganlians, followers of the Phoenix Child, thought magic was a sin, the lure of the devilâand they only had one devil, which seemed insufficient to Droplet. Ganlians devoted themselves to ridding the world of magicâs corruption.
This wasnât going well for them.
But up against the entire panoply of what magic could offer a person, Ganlians had one key weapon in their arsenal: offering cheap lodging and good food at all times, no questions asked.
Rangitam led them to the Church of the Constant Fire. It sat on the northern side of Hell Street, only a block back from the hubbub. Though its walls were stained dark gray by layers of grime, the bowl of flame above the door burned bright, a beacon in the twilight blue. Hundreds of tiny panels of carved bone adorned the heavy wooden doors. A wrinkled Ganlian priestess with a shock of curly white hair welcomed them with open arms, literally.
âWhat a good day this is, bringing new visitors to our door! Welcome, welcome. Iâm Mother Enneth. Come on in.â Motherâthat would be a âsheâ for Ganlians, then. Droplet had never gotten the hang of figuring out proper forms of address for people who didnât follow the First Four and the god-tokens system. Once the heavy door had thudded shut behind them, Mother Enneth asked, âAnd what are your names? Do I get real names with these ones?â she added to Rangitam.
âThatâs up to them, maâam,â said Rangitam.
Mother Enneth sighed. âThe only fair response, I suppose.â She returned her attention to the bewildered Droplet and Azera. âWhat names would you like me to use while youâre here, dears?â
âAre⦠are you actually a priestess?â said Azera.
âIâm a priestess, and despite what many seem to think about Ganlians, that word is not a synonym for âfool,â â Mother Enneth said dryly. âFor instance, when someone spends a few years bringing all their visitors to a friendly, welcoming, warded building without a single Eye, it doesnât take me a few years to figure things out.â
âItâs the breakfasts, Mother. Your people do things with sausages and eggs that are almost enough to convert me,â said Rangitam, face the picture of sincerity.
âFlatterer.â
âIâm Azera.â
âDalere.â
Dozens of nooks for bone carvings of phoenixes and saints pockmarked the scrubbed, off-white walls of the church. No Eye was getting in here.
âHow long will you need a room for?â Mother Enneth asked.
âThatâs one of the many things we wish we knew,â Azera said.
âLetâs say until the day after the solstice,â Droplet said.
Azera looked shocked. âThatâs remarkably optimistic, from you,â she said.
âYouâre a bad influence,â Droplet said.
âOne bed will have to be enough. Thereâs always an influx of people seeking shelter around the solstice,â Mother Enneth said. She grimaced, though Droplet couldnât tell whether the displeasure came from the overabundance of people or from other, darker thoughts. Hopefully just the crowds. They certainly were enough to perturb Droplet.
Theyâd arrived as dinner was ending. They snagged bowls of flaky white fish (for Azera and Rangitam) and a concoction of nuts,
