Connor’s grilled cheese sandwiches were a huge hit, with Lynn enjoying the four different, oozing cheeses and eating a bit of the tomato soup.

“I guess I should make cheesy stuff for you, Mom,” Connor said. “You seem to enjoy that.”

Dara’s mouth was full, but she still managed to say, “Wasn’t this for my birthday? Not for you two.” She pointed a finger from Lynn to Donovan, then settled on Connor. “You really are a pretty damn good cook.”

Lynn placed a big box in Dara’s lap. “I hope this helps make up for us missing your birthday.”

Dara was almost overcome by emotion as she took the box into her lap.

“You didn’t have to do this, you guys. I’m a big girl. I know it was a rough time …” When Donovan shot her a parental look, she finally said, “Thank you.”

When she opened the delivered bag and saw a hidden card from Lynn, Dara said, “You said you didn’t know who this was from.”

“Well, I wasn’t sure what your Dad had done … it easily could’ve been from him.”

“And the four singers? The quartet?”

“Oh! They got here?” Donovan appeared surprised. ‘They told me that it might not work out today. Good to hear that happened.”

Dara reached for the Nordstrom and boutique bags that her father had settled on the floor.

“See, Connor? Guys don’t always wrap. Definitely not Dads.”

Donovan gave Connor a questioning glance and then shrugged.

Dara looked over her loot and smiled at all of them.

“Thanks so much. All of you. This was a wonderful day and evening.”

“Not done yet!” Connor exclaimed. As he lit the candles on the chocolate cake, he asked, “Does anyone sing? Aside from Mom?”
