Chapter Thirteen

Jake wheeled into Dr. Lewis’s office with a broad smile. He leaned forward and accepted the bottle of water the doctor offered, setting it on the side table next to him. “How’re you doing, Doc? It seems like forever since our last meeting.”

“Great to see you looking so happy, Jacob.” The doctor walked to his standard seat and made himself comfortable. “It’s been about a month. I take it your vacation at the cottage went well?”

“You could say that,” Jake said, drumming his fingers on the arms of his wheelchair. “I feel like…” He breathed in deep and closed his eyes for a moment, trying to sum up his feelings in a few words. “…like a brand new person.”

“Would you say you feel whole?” the doctor asked with a hint of curiosity lingering on his words.

Jake’s eyes flashed open, and he stared at Dr. Lewis. Do I feel whole? He found himself smiling at odd times during the day. Thinking of new ways he might enjoy sex with his wife when they were alone. Jumping in to help with cooking again. Volunteering for projects at work that took him out of the office and into the courtroom. Working out and gaining upper body strength.

“Yes,” he said with a confident nod. “I’m beginning to feel whole again.”

“Excellent. Excellent.” Dr. Lewis flipped open his notepad with his pen poised over the page. “I’m very interested in exploring this with you. Would you mind if I use what we learn from your experience in my research articles? Completely confidential, of course.”

A seed of doubt sprouted in Jake’s chest as he contemplated the request, but who was he to decide if others would benefit from his experiences? If sharing his story would help even one other person in his predicament…

“Sure, Doc. I don’t mind being a guinea pig if it helps others.”

Dr. Lewis took a sip of water. “Tell me a little about your vacation with Jessica and Chad. All three of you were there for the full two weeks?”

“Yep.” Jake ran his hand through his hair and blew out a breath of air. “Geez. Where do I start? It was amazing. We went inner tubing! Can you believe it? Chad found this wet suit with buoyancy panels… It was awesome. And we played Frisbee, and…”

Adrenaline coursed through his body as the stories poured out of him, one after the other. He even managed to draw a few chuckles out of the old man. Dr. Lewis grinned and nodded as he wrote copious amounts of notes. But he didn’t interrupt, allowing Jake to ramble for nearly half the session.

“It all sounds fantastic,” the doctor said at last. “Chad seems to push your buttons in the right way. I’m encouraged by your willingness to try the things you used to love before the accident again. But I’m curious about something.”

Jake grinned from ear to ear and stretched his arms. “What’s that?”

“You haven’t mentioned anything about sex.” Dr. Lewis narrowed his eyes on him with a tilt of his head.
