The Measure of Things

Monday morning arrived. I still had confidence problems, and I thought they would last a while, but I had settled into the school. The professors pushed me, but I was never lacking in help, and I could see my own progress.

I was beginning to make full sentences in Italian. I thought that was pretty amazing. I made a point of naming the things around me, using my English-Italian dictionary to look things up. When Saige saw that, she said, “You know. I have Post-Its.”

“And?”

“You can put the names of things on them, for a while.”

And so I did. I didn’t have to keep a particular Post-It up for more than a few days, and my vocabulary expanded dramatically. I felt really good about that.

I could type. I was slow, but I could type. I found that almost magical, my fingers moving and letters, complete words appearing on the page before me. Typing was just totally awesome!

And I was making progress in all my classes, working to catch up. I knew I’d remain behind in many of my subjects for the foreseeable future, but I decided that was okay.

I attended classes, and then I received a text from Annita. Are you studying with me today? What is your last class?

I wrote back and forth with her for a minute until we agreed she’d collect me in the square at the center of Circe Center.

Professor Venfiel wore me out, but then she asked, “Do you have questions?”

“Maybe,” I said. “I went for a bike ride yesterday.”

“Probably the last of the season.”

“So I’ve heard,” I said. “I went with one of the werewolves.”

“Did you keep up?”

I laughed. “Seriously? But she said… Um.”

“Spit it out, Ms. Cooke.”

“She said earth mages and air mages might be able to. Keep up, that is.”

“Ah. Probably not keep up, but you want to know if you could use your magic to enhance your performance.”

“That’s probably an advanced skill.”

“Not so advanced, although you’re not ready. It’s the sort of skill we do teach you. Oh, not specific to riding a bicycle, but we will teach you to use your earth magic to enhance your strength and stamina for activities such as bicycling.”

“What about my air magic?”

“To blow you along like a sailboat?”

“Yeah, I guess. I don’t think I’d last very long.”

“You have quite a lot of power for someone with no training, but you must learn finesse, and that will help your magic go so much further. For something like bicycling, your earth magic would be more useful. But in time, you will learn how you could, indeed, blow yourself along.”

“Really?”

“Really. But as you still are only able to blow away from you, you’re not ready.”

“I suppose not.”

“You’re doing quite well, Ms. Cooke.”

“I’m not feeling impatient about this. I just wanted to understand. Thank you, Professor.”

“You’re welcome. See you tomorrow.”

Annita was waiting for me, bundled in a heavy coat, hat, and mittens. We hugged, but then she hooked my arm and hurried us away.
