Soulless

Jess felt washed out after her shifter training today; could you call it such if you continually failed at it? She barely had the energy to drag herself to social, and as soon as she got to the Rec Room, she collapsed in the sofa by the window.

“I’m sure it wasn’t all bad. Come on, at least there was Geometry,” Astra said, waggling her eyebrows. Her allusion to Matteo was the last thing Jess wanted. After throwing Atsra a black look, the fae wisely left her to stew.

Lea took Jess’s obvious dejection as a personal triumph and hadn’t stopped smirking since they’d been locked in their cell. In truth, Jess hadn’t really thought about Lea’s attempt to maul her in the Cathedral. As soon as Lea had been let in, it had been obvious that she’d try something. A few days ago, after Jess’s agitation around Rune, Lea had quizzed her about what was going on. Of course, Jess had claimed there was nothing going on. But thanks to Lea’s preternatural senses she’d known she was lying to her. Besides Jess’s own overreactions around Rune, he had been noticeably distracted by her too. Something Lea was embittered about. She’d given him the cold shoulder the last couple of days, noticing that he was more engaged in looking at Jess than in listening to her. With trepidation, Jess had finally claimed a seat by the vamp in social yesterday.

They’d had their first proper chat, a stilted one, full of code. They’d managed to talk about Queen Mara, the likelihood that someone in the Rem Clan had framed Jess, and the topic of her shifter training. This last subject had been used to allude to the seed magic. Rune had pressed his point that he believed that it was Jess’s self-belief, a nurturing of light-ness, that would allow her to shift.

Jess’s heart skipped once more when Rune entered the Rec Room. The vamp made a beeline for her. Astra started to practice her wing yoga, screening off the main area where the others were seated. Jess wondered if her friend was deliberately giving her and Rune some privacy. The semblance of it, anyway. Just like yesterday, Jess was acutely aware that the others could hear everything they said. After Rune had left yesterday, Astra had commented on Rune’s new intense look. The fae said that the way he had looked at Jess was the look most people reserved for chocolate bars. Her comment had again thrown Jess’s feelings into disarray. Was it possible that Rune felt the same pull of attraction that Jess felt towards him? When she’d asked him in the cell the night of the attack if he didn’t want out of the pen, he’d evaded answering. He’d commented that the seed magic was likely the reason Queen Mara had come after her. But he’d held off glamouring the guards from getting the yew from Raine’s office because of the danger outside the pen for Jess. The question was, why
