Chapter Ten

Pounding.

It was coming from everywhere, all around me. Inside or outside? Was it in my head? Was this what an aneurism felt like?

I sat up groggily in my bed and grumbled at the sunrise outside my window. Was it the end of the world? Did anybody else hear that pounding and pounding and pounding? My heart lurched then. Was somebody trying to get in?

I threw off the blankets and scurried down the hall to the front door. Peeking out of the peep hole, I growled as I unlocked the door and swung it inward.

“Good God Almighty!” I yelled. “What in the ever-loving hell are you doing?”

Everett jumped with surprise, nearly losing his balance on the ladder. He caught the roof and blinked down at me. “Dammit, Collins, you trying to kill me?”

“Yes! I’m going to kill you! Do you know what time it is?”

“It’s the only time I could get over to do this.”

“What are you doing?”

“Fixing your gutter. I noticed the last time I was here that it was hanging off. It could crush you and Henley when you leave the house.”

“Everett, I know you’re like some bigshot contractor and this house is a dump compared to the last one you flipped, but this is a rental. I have a landlord that can take care of minuscule stuff like this.”

“I don’t mind doing it.”

“You know what happens to someone like me when they don’t get their beauty sleep?”

“They turn into werewolves?”

“They murder the people who made them ugly!”

“You’re going to wake up Henley with all this yelling.”

“Ugh! The next thing you’re going to have to fix around here will be your decapitated head.”

“Wait, how would I fix my own decapitated head?”

“I don’t have the time to stand here explaining everything to you.”

Henley began to howl from inside. Grr!

“I told you,” he called down from the ladder.

“Shush, we’re not friends anymore.”

I slammed the door behind me and ran off to get Henley. There was no getting her back to sleep after that. By the time we made it into the kitchen to begin our battle over what she didn’t want to eat for breakfast, Everett was gone. That was a shame since I still planned on beheading him for waking us. Henley was all kinds of grouchy from the rude awakening, and not only refused her food, but made a fit out of it by shaking her head and flailing her chubby little fists until the bowl was upturned on the high chair. I took a deep breath, feeling my patience wearing thin.

It wasn’t until after I was finally done cleaning up her mess and she was playing happily by herself, that I saw myself in the mirror. I couldn’t remember ever looking this tired and blotchy and altogether disheveled. I wasn’t getting any sleep whatsoever since I’d found Brock dead. I just couldn’t get the image out of my head. What had happened that night to make him do something that drastic? I tried to relive our last conversation over and over, but I just didn’t know.
