“Every day I’m thankful you’re part of my life. But especially today.” –Elder Adams

“Race you to the top of the stairs.” Jase motions for me to follow him.

“Okay.” I place my hand on the Jenningses’ ornately carved wood banister and try to climb the stairs. I put one foot in front of the other, but no matter how many times I try, I can’t move forward.

Jase’s lips curl into a smile, and he holds out his hand to me.

I reach for him, but he’s too far away. Stair after stair after stair, I climb and climb and climb, but I can’t get any closer to him. There are too many obstacles between us.

My legs grow tired. I can’t climb anymore.

A hand grasps mine from behind. I look down to see what has a hold on me, and I’m met with steel-gray eyes and alcohol-laced breath.

My throat constricts.

His hand tightens around mine, and he drags me down a step.

“Jase, help.” I look back up, but Jase is even farther up the stairs now.

The hand tugs me down another step. Please stop.

Where’s Harper? Kate?

They left, I remember. They didn’t like this party: too dangerous, too dark.

I should have left with them. Why didn’t I leave with them? If only I had just left with them.

I frantically look for Jase. But he’s already reached the top of the stairs and is almost out of sight.

“Right this way.” The man behind me pulls.

“No,” I say.

“Right this way.” He yanks.

“No,” I whisper.

“Right. This. Way,” he demands.
