Apparently seeing Quinn Donohue in taffeta is a coveted entertainment ticket, because when my mom heard about the shopping spree, she insisted on coming along as well. Kerri had already picked out a halter dress in her signature red for her date with Mike Bonner, so everyone in my little group was truly shopping just for me. When the five of us walked into Macy’s, it felt like I had an entourage, everyone trailing behind me, pointing things out for my inspection. But from their choices, it didn’t seem as if any of them actually had me in mind.

“Oh! Quinn! What about this?” my mother said, picking up a pink strapless dress with a huge poofy skirt.

“Okay, this isn’t the Oscars and I am not Hilary Duff,” I said.

She put it back on the rack and kept browsing. I know my mom loves me, but sometimes I think she really wanted a girly-girl.

“You have to try this on!” Hailey cried, running over with a black thing that was about the size of a bandanna.

“Hailey, I don’t think that would cover her ass,” Kerri said.

“Thanks a lot,” I replied. But it was true. It might have made a cool belt if she rolled it up.

“Check this out,” Grace said, producing something in blue leather with laces on the bodice.

“Um…no,” my mother said, appearing out of nowhere.

My phone beeped, and I ignored it. I knew it was Max with another embarrassing lovey-dovey message. It beeped again and everyone stared at my pocket.

“You gonna get that?” Kerri asked.

“No. I think I’m going to go look over here,” I said, pointing at a wall full of basic black dresses.

“Please try on something in a color,” my mother begged.

I sighed as my phone beeped again. “How about you pick out three dresses and I’ll promise to try them on?” I said. “Just three.”

“Yes!” my mom cheered. Then she attacked the racks like a poacher on the prowl.

Hailey, Grace, and Kerri followed me over to the wall of black, and we started inspecting the dresses. My phone beeped yet again. Was it just me, or did it sound more and more sickening each time?

“Uh, Quinn? Why aren’t you answering that?” Grace asked.

“What if it’s Max?” Hailey put in.

“That why she’s not answering it,” Kerri told them.

“What?” they both blurted out.

“Thanks for that,” I told Kerri.

She shrugged by way of apology. Suddenly Grace and Hailey were on me like vultures on roadkill.

“Are you mad at him?”

“What’s going on?”

“Are you two breaking up?”

I extricated my arms from their grips and tried to lower my tense shoulders.

“No, we’re not breaking up,” I assured them. From the level of their relief you’d think I’d just told them they were both going to stay thin and cellulite-free for all eternity. “It’s just…a lot,” I explained. “He calls me every ten minutes and texts me every two. I need a break.”

Grace and Hailey exchanged a confused look. “A break? From Max Eastwood?” Hailey said. “He’s, like, the hottest guy in school.”

“Yeah, Quinn. Who died and made you Angelina Jolie?” Grace put in, flipping some hangers vehemently.
