“I understand you are Courtney Meadows’s lawyer and are handling her estate?” Rob asked.

The lawyer’s eyes narrowed. “Yes, she hired me a few days ago. I handled her grandfather’s will, but that’s it.”

“But she’s hired you now to represent her in the sale of her land?”

“Mr. Wilson, I’m afraid that information is subject to client privilege, and I can’t tell you what she hired me for. Can I ask you what this is about? Where you got your information and what your interest in her land is?”

“Certainly. I understand and respect the client privilege issue, in fact, I’d like to hire you for that protection as well.”

“It sounds to me like it would be a conflict of interest for me to work for you and Courtney,” responded Spencer dryly.

“That might turn out to be true, but you won’t know that until I’ve hired you and told you what my interest is.”

“Point taken,” conceded Spencer.

“What I propose is that I hire you, tell you what my interest in The Meadows is under client privilege, then if you feel there’s a conflict, I’ll fire you.”

Spencer raised his eyebrows in response. “Or I could quit,” he said a bit huffily.

“I know, this is pretty weird, but I don’t want you to work on my behalf, I simply want you to understand what my objectives are, so you won’t work against me…” Rob paused. “Who knows, maybe we can even work together.”

“No promises until I know what this is all about,” said Spencer.

“Understood, but once you hear what I have to say, I’m a hundred percent certain you’ll work with me, or allow me to work with Courtney without her knowing it.”

“Without her knowing it? What’s that about?” Spencer queried.

“Let’s just say I like my privacy. Plus, there could be advantages to my remaining anonymous until the time is right.”

“I’m not sure I get that bit, but OK, I’m intrigued. As of this moment, I am representing you.”

Rob provided the attorney with complete details about his ideas to buy a part of The Meadows, and to work with Courtney to develop it.

Spencer listened raptly.

“Wow, impressive plans, but do you have the resources to pull it off? We’re talking about a huge amount of money,” he asked.

“Yes, I do,” said Rob simply.

“OK, I guess I have to believe you, but be advised that the moment I suspect you of any deviousness, all client privilege is out the window and I’ll act a hundred percent on Courtney’s behalf. Understood?”

“Understood.”

Spencer stood and offered his hand, which Rob shook solemnly.

“OK, we have an understanding. What’s next?” asked Spencer. “Did you know that Ms. Meadows and her friend think they spotted smoke at the back of her land?”

“I did not,” said Rob. “When?”

“Yesterday.”

“Any chance it was workers? I know they’ve been surveying and doing environmental testing,” asked Rob.

“That was the first thought Barc and I had – do you know Barc, up in Sayre?”

“Owns the General Store, yes, I’ve met him a couple of times.
