AFTER LAST NIGHT I had no doubt I could win back Sophia. The one thing she cannot deny is that we were meant to be together. Her eyes held the truth of her feelings even if she refused to admit it to herself. For the first time in three years, I felt whole; being inside Sophia was like coming home, and I was not leaving.

I don’t like this thing with Marcus. Someone killed him, and my gut says it’s related to Sophia. I just need to figure out how. So I decided to give Sophia a little space today to absorb everything. Plus, I was going to start house hunting today. I had five hours before Roe would be home, and I wanted to spend every minute finding the perfect place for our family.

And we would be a family.

Once I showered and dressed, I went to see Kickstand, finding him in his office. I went in, shutting the door. “What’s up?” Kickstand asked, pushing his glasses up onto his head.

“You heard what the cops said this morning about Marcus Humphry?” I asked but knew he was sitting there and heard it all.

“Yeah, old boyfriend, right?”

“He was, and I hadn’t seen him around Hope Chapel or Elkview since before Sophia left. And then, all of a sudden, he appeared when she did. My gut says that’s not a coincidence. So I want you to find everything you can on Marcus.”

“I will see what I can find out and let you know when I have a file together, it shouldn’t be too complicated,” Kickstand assured me.

“I should mention, three years ago, I was sent a video with Marcus in it, there was a woman who looked like Sophia in bed with him, and he called her Sophia and time stamped it on a night when he knew we wouldn’t be together. I have no doubt he wanted me to break up with Sophia, but I think someone else was involved.”

“That’s why you broke up? Man, that sucks, and Sophia never knew? How’d you find out it wasn't her in the video?”

My gut clenched at what I had believed. “Yes, and now I am doing whatever I need to do to get her back. I was such a fool; Sophia had a birthmark I forgot about until I saw it again. The woman didn’t have it.”

“Wow, Lord, that is one fuck up. I’m surprised Silver hasn’t killed and dumped your body, or Sophia hasn’t done it herself. I wish you luck,” Kickstand chuckled, shaking his head.

“Thanks, brother; let me know when you have something,” I said, walking out the door. I was going to grab my bike and start looking at houses. I wanted to get us out of the clubhouse as soon as possible.
