While we were having breakfast of bacon and eggs, we discussed what we would do that day.
“Do you want to go on a yacht trip?” my father suggested. “It looks like it’ll be a sunny and windy day. What do you think?”
The weather was perfect for such an outing and sailing would tear me away from my dark thoughts.
“I’m all for it. It’ll be fun,” I replied and Johnny knitted his eyebrows.
“I’m not so sure about that. Anyway, I’ve arranged to meet someone at five in the afternoon.”
“Well, cancel it then,” my father said reproachfully. “So you can spend one day of the weekend with your family.”
Johnny slammed his fork down on his plate and tried to defend himself. “I haven’t seen my friends in more than twenty-five days.”
“Stop complaining. Didn’t you see what hell your sister has been through? Are you telling me you don’t want to spend more time with her before you go back to school?”
“We should be able to get back by five,” Melanie intervened and stroked my father’s hand to calm him down.
I really didn’t like that they were at each other’s throats again. My brother was going through a difficult phase, where parties, friends and girls were more important and exciting than anything else. Whereas my dad was thinking of me. I saw my dad’s point, but I didn’t want Johnny’s personal life to suffer because of me. He’d also had a very rough time while I’d been missing. I’d seen with my own eyes his tears and pain when I’d woken up in the hospital. He had the right to have fun with his friends. Especially since I had no intention of leaving my father’s house and we’d have plenty of chances to spend time together.
“Let’s leave the yacht trip for tomorrow. Today, I’d rather take a dip in the swimming pool and catch some rays,” I proposed to Johnny’s delight. To be honest, I would’ve preferred to spend the day out in the ocean, but wanted to please my brother. It was important to me to see him happy, rather than always pouting and angry about something.
“Sis, you’re the best. This is why I love you so much.”
“As you wish,” my father said, raising his arms to concede defeat. Then he remembered something and, with a smile on his face, continued, “I almost forgot. We have a surprise for you, Alexia.”
“What is it?” I asked curiously.
I loved the surprises my father had been springing on me ever since I was little. He loved spoiling me. Perhaps because I was his only daughter or because I really resembled my mother, my bond with Colin, my father, was very deep and strong. He was the person on whose shoulder I could lean when I was anxious and with whom I could share my times of joy. For my entire life, my loving dad had supported me wholeheartedly, for which I would be eternally grateful to him.
Colin stood up, took out a small, white box from the nearby cupboard and handed it over to me.
