CHAPTER 7
Steps from the door of the Magic Cauldron, Addison grabbed Josie's wrist. Her fingers felt almost as cold as Dalton's.
Marshal had walked out the door in front of the women, loading armfuls of packages with Atticus and Ben in their silver SUV. Pearl had vanished as quickly as she'd come, and with both of her children.
"Josie," Addison hissed, into her ear.
"I hate secrets, but we can't tell them. They already have too much to worry about."
Those words sounded like they had cost Addison.
Josie's mind raced to every harsh word she'd heard the older woman utter. How some of them had seemed so out of character. How she'd wanted to take Josie to this store even though leaving the coven house could be dangerous.
Because she had wanted to see Pearl, Josie realized. Because she thought she was pregnant and wanted to be sure. Because she was tired and worried, and Josie knew she was making it so much worse.
Addison wanted Josie to swear. She'd pulled out her wand, and she stilled had Josie's fingers in her icy grip.
But Josie had gone numb, as she thought back to the prophecy Lance had repeated in his lewd way. How afterward, Josie wished that the most powerful witch could be anyone but her.
It had been the first time in her short life that she'd wished for less power. Always as a girl in her mother's house, she'd wished for more. Enough to make her mother fear her for a chance, and not the other way around.
It had felt cowardly at the time. To wish such a destiny on to someone else. Only when Josie had thought of those words, again and again, she'd seen the awful warlock priest on the other side of that prophecy. Just the thought of his face was enough to make dread fill her stomach like quicksand threatening to drag her down
Josie was nodding numbly back at Addison, all while wondering if the baby she carried was the one. Josie had seen Addison perform almost impossible magical feats and still be in good enough shape to boss her son around and wonder for their well-being. And Josie's fatherâshe knew he had power.
Jocelyn Acker, thought about magic like it was two cups of it pouring into a third. Josie's mother would have never consented to have relations with a weak warlockâthat might have watered down the magic in any children.
Tiny sparks seemed to race through Josie then. Warm, hot, hopeful. Maybe this wasn't a terrible ordeal to feel bad about wishing into someone else's lap. Maybe it was a blessing.
It seemed such an easy solution. Such a pretty, easy bow. A smile tugged at Josie's lips, but she swallowed it down.
"Swear it," Addison said.
That was why she had her wand outâto make it official.
"I swear, not to tell Ben and Atticusâ" Josie said using their names.
"What we learned here today, I swear not to imply. I swear not to hint."
Josie felt the spell stick to her ribs. Addison was satisfied.
