The fleet programme called for all ships to assemble in Weymouth Bay and carry out exercises in preparation for the steam-past. The Commander-in-Chief delegated authority to me as Flag Captain to manoeuvre ships as required, giving the appropriate orders in his name. He and his staff were fully confident with this procedure as his staff were not ’sea-going’ in an operational capacity.

All exercises were completed satisfactorily, although enlivened by patchy fog and a generous number of yachts behaving unpredictably and calling for rapid avoiding action. On completion all ships anchored in Torbay in their assigned stations.

Kirstie and I had been invited to the summer ball at the Britannia Royal Naval College at Dartmouth that evening and, as customary, I sought the Admiral’s permission to go ashore. ‘Certainly not,’ said he. ‘There is no one between me and the Fleet except you’. He had a point.
