LIBERTY, CLASSES, MAN AND GOD

During the years of his vagrant young manhood, Gorky seems to have developed all the basic ideas that were to inform his writing. These he would hold to stubbornly for the rest of his days; neither the Narodnik Mikhail Romas nor the experienced writers to whom he apprenticed himself, Korolenko and Chekhov, nor the strong-willed men to each of whom he attached himself in turn in his search for “a man with a true and living faith,”8 was ever able substantially to alter them.

An examination of these basic ideas makes visible the abyss that separates Gorky from V. I. Lenin.
