Honor turned and ran, not because she had some misconception that she might actually be faster than Conn or that he wouldn’t come after her. She ran because one glimpse of the rage in his normally remote gray eyes convinced her she was dealing one hundred percent with the avenging, predatory side of his nature. And when you were the potential victim in a situation like that, you ran.

She fled around the corner of the house, heading for the beach simply because there was nowhere else to go. She knew he was right behind her even though the sound of his movement was inaudible above the slap of the surf and the rising rush of the sea breeze. Honor also knew that fleeing was hopeless. She had yearned to get past the barriers of Conn’s self-control but she had never dreamed of doing it this way.

He didn’t call out to her or order her to stop. Conn simply bore down on her with the silent intensity of a large hunting cat intent on bringing a gazelle to the ground. Running across the sand was like running through snow. It dragged at her feet, making Honor think of those odd nightmares in which the sleeper found herself being pursued but was unable to escape. She sucked in the cold air, her heart pounding from exertion and fear, and as she reached the water’s edge Honor felt Conn’s hand on her waist.

“No!” she shrieked, spinning around to strike at him in desperation. “Let me go, damn you!”

“Did you think you could run from me? There’s no place on this planet you could hide.” He pulled her against the hard length of his body, trying to control her struggles.

But as far as Honor was concerned at that moment, she was fighting for her life. She lashed at him with her nails, kicked at him with her feet, twisted relentlessly in his grasp and tried to use her teeth on his arm.

“You little—” Conn’s words were muffled as Honor’s constant struggling threw both victim and pursuer off balance. They landed in a sprawl on the cold, wet packed sand. “I’ll teach you to betray me,” Conn rasped, throwing his thigh heavily across her legs to still their thrashing movement.

“I didn’t betray you!” The words were torn from her as she pushed uselessly at his descending weight. “I don’t know what you’re talking about, but you can’t do this to me. You have no right to hurt me!”

“I haven’t even begun to hurt you. After the way you’ve hurt me—”

He broke off abruptly, but not before Honor had heard the startling rawness in his voice. She wondered at it, trying to make that evidence of pain mesh with the rage she was certain was governing his actions.

Breathlessly she pushed at him.

He pinned her relentlessly to the damp sand, using his weight to crush her beneath him until her struggles finally stilled. For a long moment Conn stared down into her blazing eyes. He held her wrists above her head as he lay on top of her.
