Chapter 23

Lindy dragged herself out of bed and looked at the clock in disgust. Sunday was supposed to be for sleeping in half the day. Sure, they did an occasional family brunch, but those didn’t even get started until 11:00 am. It was never fancy. The dress code was pajamas or whatever they threw on after waking up late, and they would make brunch together. Lindy would put out the ingredients and mix mimosas or bloody Marys, and Seth would take his place at the stove. Their mom would set the table and probably bring in a bouquet of flowers from the garden to put on the little patio table where they would sit outside and eat by the garden.

Sundays weren’t supposed to be for early rising to prepare for a fancy brunch with Seth and his girlfriend. Never mind that Lindy and her mom both liked Libby—so far anyway. Lindy valued sleep second only to her art, and she muttered curses as she picked out actual clothes to wear. I mean, actual clothes to Sunday brunch! Lindy thought in disgust. She pulled out a pair of blue jean leggings that she liked and found a black tunic top that said in gold print: “I shot the sheriff.” She pulled out a pair of gold earrings and stacked on a few bracelets, but then took them off when she thought about having to cook with them. Besides, they’d already met Libby. It wasn’t like she had to make a good impression or anything. She was just coming over to eat. No big deal.

Lindy chewed on her lower lip as she slathered moisturizer on her face and lined up her makeup on the sink. But it was a big deal, she thought. The last woman he’d brought home had been Charlotte. Their mom had been warm and welcoming, but hadn’t made any overtures beyond what was strictly polite, so Lindy suspected that she felt the same. It wasn’t until after Charlotte had cheated and left town that they admitted to each other their suspicions. Lindy hadn’t liked the way that Charlie had always kept her phone face down and the screen turned away when messages came in. It had seemed wrong somehow. Then she hadn’t liked how often she used the excuse of work to stay late in Athens, but then she would appear in Facebook photos with groups of friends at what appeared to be social events and not work functions as she’d claimed. Her mom had admitted that she hadn’t thought that Charlie and Seth were well-suited for a number of reasons, but hadn’t wanted to get involved. Although she’d been worried when they moved in together, she’d kept her own counsel.

Of course, Libby isn’t Charlie, Lindy thought. Already, Lindy was inclined to like Libby. She was smart and sweet and maybe a little quirky, but as a fellow artist, Lindy was willing to give her a pass on that. She’d noticed her taking a couple of notes even in the painting class.
