Chapter 11
Monday went by in a fog for Tony, distant and jerky. Long periods dragged out slow as molasses, followed by odd jumps in the day when he looked at a clock and was shocked at where the time had gone. Heâd managed to put off thinking about the hearing most of the weekend. Well, other than an occasional bitch-fest with Sabrina on Messenger. She was all gung-ho about his civil rights, and heâd eventually found himself toning his own concerns way down. Tonight wasnât going to be a big thing. It was just a meeting of GSA parents. God, he hoped it wasnât going to be a big thing.
Heâd thought about staying at school between three and five oâclock, doing lesson prep or something. But when the bell sounded, he was about the third person out the door. He went home and found a note from Mac about picking up the kids and taking them to Tonyâs parentsâ house for the evening. Bless him. Tony was so glad not to have to pretend everything was fine for two hours. Even if it was fine. Should be fine. Fuck.
Tony had showered and dried off, and wrapped himself in a towel, before he heard Mac coming back. Maybe I shouldâve waited to take that shower. But truthfully, he wasnât in the mood for sex, as stunned as Marty would be to hear him say so. And fuck! For a moment he missed Marty so much his chest ached. As many wonderful friends as he still had, there was no one quite like Marty. Sometimes Tony still felt him so close, so vivid that Tony could hear his voice in his head.
Marty would want to march into that hearing arm in arm, singing a show tune. Marty wouldâve told the kids they were entitled to be big flamers if they wanted to and not to let little minds get them down. A few of the kids wouldâve been horrified, but the rest⦠Maybe Tony could get Sinclair to come meet them someday, in either of their identities. The actor had come over to the house for an hour both Saturday and Sunday, and Mac had come out of each session looking wrung out but determined. It was a good look. Tony was starting to really like Walterâ¦
Tony jumped as Mac wrapped strong arms around him from behind.
âDidnât you hear me come in?â
âI guess I forgot.â
âUm, okay.â Mac ran a hand down his chest. âI like you like this but you look cold.â
âTrying to decide what to wear.â
âThis is nice.â Mac ran his hand back up.
Tony wriggled. âFor the hearing. Keep your paws to yourself and tell me if I should wear a blazer? Or maybe a good sweater? I donât want to look like Iâm going to court.â
âMaybe what you would wear to class the first day of the term?â
âI guess.â Tony usually dressed up a bit more at the start of each term to look older and less manipulable, and then relaxed as his kids got used to him.
