Nine

~Jade~

After Cal left, I dragged my tired self back to my room and dropped into bed, snuggling onto the side he had slept on – after he had made love to me. The sheets and pillowcase still held traces of his scent along with our lovemaking. Smiling, I drifted back to sleep.

Around nine o’clock, I woke up and started my day. I washed two loads of laundry – including my bedsheets even though I loved that they smelled like Cal. Hopefully, I could get them to smell like him again shortly. Then I cleaned all of the rooms in my apartment.

I had just bought groceries three days ago but I wanted to make a special dessert for Saturday. Cal was making dinner for the two of us and he liked my sweets. I couldn’t help the smile crawling across my face at the double meaning of that thought.

So after taking a quick inventory of anything else I might need over the next week, I walked out to my car and headed to the grocery store. As I was dropping items into my basket, I caught a glimpse of Misti starting down the same aisle. Geez, did that girl only shop on days I did? Ugh. Hoping to make an undetected getaway, I twisted and almost jogged up the aisle.

“Hey, Jade. I thought that was you.” Misti called after me.

Reluctantly – and somehow managing not to sag my shoulders in defeat – I plastered a smile onto my face and turned to her. “Hey yourself. Sorry I didn’t see you. I only stopped in for a few items so I was trying to be quick and not paying attention to the people.”

“That’s okay. I saw you.”

Yeah, lucky me.

“Sorry about blurting about Cal to Anastasia. I would have thought you had told your best friend. But are you really dating him?”

Not that it was really any of her business. “Yes. We are dating.”

Something flickered behind her eyes that resembled jealously but it flashed so quickly I couldn’t be sure.

“I would’ve thought you would have taken the advice from your best friend. Since you didn’t listen to me.” Her lips almost twisted into a scowl but she abruptly schooled her features. “I mean we are just looking out for you. With your past and his, I don’t know if it’s such a good idea for you to be with him. Doesn’t he make you the least bit uneasy?”

Once again, this wasn’t any of her business and I refused to share anything with her. She wasn’t my best friend. And at the moment, I wasn’t convinced she was even my friend. “Thank you for your concern but I’m okay.” I needed to change the subject or hope she’d just walk away. “By the way, have you heard of any disturbances or strange happenings in our building lately?” She loved to be in on all of the gossip and have people think she was in the know on all things, so I hoped this would be enough to get her off of the Cal track.
