Now I knew exactly how Trent had felt. The fear gripped me tightly, suffocating me until I couldn’t breathe.

“We told my parents. Maybe that’s enough for tonight.”

Trent sent me an unimpressed look. “You can’t chicken out now. We have to tell mine too, or mark my words, they’ll be banging on my door directly after sunrise tomorrow. Do you want to get up that early? I don’t.”

“Are you sure?” His mom acted nice enough, but she seemed like the fierce, protective type. She would probably kick my ass for getting her baby pregnant.

We got out of the car together but didn’t even make it to the door before it burst open. His mom stood there in a red polka-dotted nightgown long enough to brush the porch, her hands on her wide hips, her eyes narrowed on us.

“Are you two dating? I heard from Jennine, who heard from Cassandra, who heard from Ambrose that you are dating. Is this true?”

“Dammit, Mom,” Trent grumbled.

She hustled us inside, her hands on our backs as she practically pushed us into the house.

A man around Trent’s age leaned against one of the walls, his arms crossed over his chest. He reminded me a lot of Trent, with the same sandy-blond hair and blue eyes, except he was taller and more muscular, his scent heavier. It was obvious he was an alpha, and Trent’s brother, Brodie.

“Mom—”

She pushed us farther inside the house and toward a living room. Trent’s brother trailed behind us, and once she had us seated on the couch, Brodie took a recliner. Two sets of eyes stared at us hard, and I felt like an insect being scrutinized. They were wondering if we were dating, if I was good enough for their Trent, and maybe even if I was too young for him.

Finally an older man entered, and I didn’t have to hazard a guess to know he was Trent’s father. He was tall and wide, with thick muscles that bunched together under a thin T-shirt. It wasn’t hard to see where Trent and his brother got their looks from either.

“Are you two dating?” his mom demanded again. Her eyes were intense, and with wisps of gray hair slipping out of the updo she had it tucked into, she made me feel like she wouldn’t hesitate to fly across the room and smack me upside the head if she heard something she didn’t like.

“Mom, what did I tell you about listening to gossip?” Trent shook his head and smiled at her, but he had his elbows on his knees and his entire body practically vibrated with tension.

I wanted to sink into the cushions of the couch to hide from their curious eyes. The only time I could handle being the center of attention was when I had a guitar in my hands, because it was my wall between me and the crowd. Trent slid closer, and I gave him a nod, grateful for it.

“Well?” She came over and nudged herself into the seat beside Trent, both of us sliding over to give her room.
