Chapter Eight

“You did what?”

Tucker glanced up from packing film into his duffel bag to see Cassie clutching the phone with an incredulous look. He pushed his hat back. Whatever had happened, he hoped it wouldn’t keep them from leaving.

She sighed heavily. “Well, it can’t be helped now, can it? Do you know if Zach is free?…Oh, he’s working for Gregor this week. Pete? Julio?…Oh, well, I’ll find somebody. You take care of yourself. ’Bye.”

She hung up the phone and groaned. “Great. Just great.”

Tucker rose to his feet. “What happened?”

“Marc slipped a disc riding a mechanical bull at Spurs and Suds last night.” Her eyes narrowed. “He said he got the idea from you.”

“Me? All I did was answer questions about rodeo. I didn’t know he’d do something loco.”

Cassie rubbed the bridge of her nose. “I know. Marc tends to be a little reckless. But the plane leaves in two hours. We’ve got to be on it if we’re going to make the rodeo. Where am I going to find another assistant?”

Tucker walked over and began massaging her shoulders. He planned on getting rid of her tension in a much more pleasurable way that night. They’d already discussed sharing a room at the hotel where they could hang a Do Not Disturb sign on the door and tell the operator to hold their calls. He’d be climbing into bed with a helluva lot more relish than he’d be climbing on the back of a bull. “Do you really need an assistant?”

She rolled her head to the side, stretching the muscles of her neck under his probing fingers. “I’ve never been on a shoot without at least one.”

“You didn’t have any assistants in Florida.”

“They’d already gone home. I stayed a day extra to shoot the rodeo.”

“What about Susan?”

Cassie shook her head. “She’s makeup and wardrobe only.”

“We can handle things between the two of us, can’t we?”

Her gaze drifted away as she considered his question. “Well, I suppose. The worst part will be hauling all that equipment around. But I could make do with the bare essentials. If I absolutely have to have something I’ve left behind, I can always rent it in Phoenix.”

He pulled her arms around his waist, tugging her against him. “If we don’t have an assistant tagging along, we’ve got that much more time alone.”

Cassie’s eyes dropped to his lips. “You’ve convinced me.”

A familiar warmth stole through him, one he knew he’d remember long after Cassie left him. But he didn’t want to consider there might be a time when they wouldn’t be together. He wanted to enjoy the now.

He dipped his head slowly and felt his voice deepen. “Want a preview of tonight’s performance?”

Her smile was sultry. “On the bull?”

“Angel, you can create any fantasies you want.”

Her chuckle turned to a moan as his lips touched hers. He splayed his hands across her back and pulled her tighter as his mouth plundered hers.

“Tucker?” she said between kisses.

“Hmm?”

“We’ve got to pack…” Another kiss. “…the equipment…” Another kiss. “…and get to the airport.
