“Smiles. Laughter. Happiness. Joy. Trust. Time. Those are what you can give her. Every day, without fail.”

BAXTER

I stopped in the bathroom doorway and looked around at the controlled chaos, not quite ready to join in again, even though I didn’t have much choice in the matter. I had realized in the short time I’d known Lark, the woman rarely sat still. She was almost always busy doing things for others.

She had been working since early this morning, only stopping once for a break to talk to her friends and then for an hour or so when she went to lunch with me. Since then, she’d never stopped moving, directing the volunteers that had shown up to help pack the bags she would be delivering to the schools this Thursday.

The warehouse was a hive of activity with people from all walks of life working together. The younger men lifted and carried heavy boxes while the older men used pallet jacks to move supplies around. Everyone else was working in an assembly line fashion to fill the bags. The younger children scurried around, hauling empty baskets back for refilling. When they weren’t working, they dodged in and out of the adults, laughing and playing until they were called on again.

The men and women were all ages, sizes, colors, and backgrounds. There was a tattooed woman wearing a baby in a sling next to a bearded man that looked like he’d just returned from a three-year trek alone in the woods. The woman I’d thought I recognized earlier when she was doing laundry at my house was also here. I knew for sure now that she was the woman from the magazine cover because the two men from that same picture were working here too.

A man in scrubs had a little girl on his shoulders as he filled bags. I’d heard him identify himself as Dr. Parker as he’d stepped away to take a call earlier. A gruff biker had introduced himself to me earlier while one of the little boys that had been at my house yesterday was hanging from his arm screaming something about Lettuce. Before I could figure out what that was about, the other little boy ran over and told me he’d figured out how to slide down my stairs and wanted to come over and try out his theory as soon as possible.

When I mentioned that it was nice of Lark’s whole family to come help, one of the men laughed and said, “If you think this is everyone, you’re in for one helluva surprise.”

And now I was here without Lark to answer my many questions because she’d gotten a phone call and rushed out with several of the women who had walked down from the house to help. She had stopped working, said something to one of the men, and then rushed over to give me a quick kiss before she said, “Gotta go. Be back soon.” She ran to her house, and a few minutes later, I heard motorcycles roaring down the driveway toward the street.
