Chapter 13

A Declaration of War

Ken took in the sight of his betrothed before taking her hand once more and leading her down the stairs. Soon the entire kingdom would know of their love. Once he presented her as his bride at the feast, Father would be unable to object without appearing to lose control of him.

At the foot of the stairs, Lia grinned and wiggled her ring finger at Val.

He nodded. “Does this mean we can leave now?”

She shoved Val’s arm. “Be nice.”

“Aww, I love you too, Brother,” Ken said facetiously, continuing to lead them down the hall to the next stairwell.

Ahead of them, Conora hurried up the hallway. “There you are. I’ve been looking for you. Mother and Father are wondering— Odelia! You look amazing. Where did you get that dress?”

“I commissioned Hortensia to make it,” Ken said.

Conora looked the dress up and down. “I should get her to make one like that for me and— What are you both grinning about? Father is livid with you right now.”

Ken held up Lia’s hand. “I just asked Lia to marry me.”

Conora’s eyes lit up. “Congratulations! I see my brother’s finally seen what’s good for him for once.” She took Lia’s hand and inspected the ring. “Such a lovely design. I don’t think I’ve seen one like it before.”

“It’s a combination of Vistan and Elgathan symbols,” Lia said. “The dogwood flowers are from the Vistan crest, and the sapphires are Elgathan blue.”

Conora hugged her. “We’re going to be sisters,” she squeaked, then turned to Ken. “What are you still doing here? Go, talk to Father.”

“May I have my future bride back first?” he asked.

The color drained from Conora’s face. “You’re not going to tell him about this right now, are you?”

“Yes… I intend to present her at the feast.”

Conora shook her head. “Have you seen the mood he’s in today? You need to wait until he cools off.”

“I can’t. If I don’t make my announcement, he’s going to make his own, with a lady he’s chosen.”

Lia furrowed her brow. “You didn’t tell me that.”

“He only told me this morning, and I didn’t think that the middle of a proposal was the right moment to bring it up. Would it have changed your decision if you knew?”

“No, but if you knew he wasn’t amenable today… Was there anything else?”

He rubbed the back of his neck. “My equipment trunk is missing, and I think he might have it.”

Lia gripped his arm tightly with both hands, eyes wide with fear. “Ken, if I need to run—I have an escape route and allies in place, but it won’t matter if I can’t get out of the palace.”

Val stepped in, speaking low. “If we move now, I can have us out of Meria unseen and on the road within an hour.”

Ken grumbled. This wasn’t how things were supposed to go. He wanted to make his stand, not run. But protecting Lia was more important than proving himself. “Fine. We’ll need to change our clothes first. Conora,
