Chapter Seventeen

A couple of slow days passed. Things were getting both boring and tense in Kit’s hospital room. Brandon had not turned up any serious leads on the killing of Sam’s horse or the whereabouts of the wanted men. Paizlee, Wiona, and Kit were becoming extremely bored. Brandon worried about them. If something didn’t happen soon, he feared that the camaraderie in the room could break down, and he didn’t want to see that happen.

Then one phone call from Sheriff Watson stirred some excitement or, more accurately, angst. Brandon was taking a mid-afternoon break in Kit’s room when the sheriff called. “Brandon, we found the stolen Pathfinder.”

“Where?” Brandon asked before the sheriff could finish. The eyes of Kit, Paizlee, and Wiona widened with hope, even though they had no idea what Brandon had just been told.

“You probably won’t believe this, but it’s parked in the yard at Randall Overmyer’s ranch.”

“That’s crazy, Sheriff. So those guys must be hiding out on Randall’s ranch,” Brandon suggested, already thinking that he might go there and help find them.

He could see questions growing on the anxious faces of his friends as they listened to his half of the conversation.

“No, it’s pretty clear that they came and left because Sam’s Dodge pickup is gone,” Sheriff Watson said.

“Sheriff, I’m in Kit’s room at the hospital right now. I just put my phone on speaker. Would you repeat what you just told me so the others can hear it?”

As the sheriff did that, Brandon could see the boredom drain away in the faces of his friends. Then the sheriff went on. “Randall and his foreman are still out of state. They’re due at the Troxler ranch with Kit’s new bulls late this afternoon. I called him to tell him about Sam’s truck. Randall’s beside himself.”

Kit was feeling a lot stronger. In fact, they were finally allowing him to eat some soft food. His new best friend, Wiona, had stuck with him day and night, and he liked that. On the other hand, worries over the danger they were all in and the danger Kingfisher might be in weighed heavily on his mind. Even though the news broke the boredom, it made him extremely restless.

Kit waited for the sheriff to conclude his stunning call. Then he said, “I need to go home.”

“Kit, the doctor doesn’t even want you moved to a hospital closer to home yet,” Paizlee said. “He did say this morning when I talked to him out in the hall that he had talked to someone at the hospital in Fillmore. He said they will take you whenever he feels like it would be safe to move you.”

Brandon had been leaning against the wall, listening and thinking. He voiced his biggest concern over the possibility of Kit being moved by saying, “Kit, Sheriff Watson has been great to us by providing beefed-up security. I don’t know if Sheriff Ledford in Millard County would be able to provide the same level of security. But if you’d like, I’ll call him and see what he says.
