The world roiled around them. The earth shook. Fires burned. The air whipped wildly, fanning the flames of destruction.
In the distance, the roar of devastating waves swallowed up the screams and shouts of fear.
"Realizing what he'd done, his last act was to separate them and send the stones to the four corners of Darkhar."
Silence blanketed the room, heavy and grim.
"So, now this traitor and his minions are collecting what they believe are the fabled lost treasures?" Kyllean finally asked, voice pained and quiet. "To, what? Try to take control of Darkhar?"
"Not just Darkhar." Islyne cleared her throat uncomfortably. "I think they want to lay claim to the whole continent of Morroinn."
"What makes you think that? How do you know all this?" Kyllean demanded, his growing frustration evident to Leandra. She had to curl her hands tight against the urge to go to him. To soothe him.
Instead, she guiltily held herself back. Because she needed the information Islyne was sharing. She couldn't risk reminding everyone that she was still there. Or that she probably shouldn't be.
"There was a journal at the Winter Palace, purportedly written by the emperor's great-nephew," Islyne explained. "A vain, arrogant man who collected all the tales passed down through his family in his quest to find the treasures. He was convinced that he could control the magic better than his great-uncle. That he could re-form the lost empire. With himself as the emperor."
Islyne shrugged, and her lips pinched into a regretful smile. "All the stories and anecdotes in it were so fantastical and outlandish, and I thought it was just a clever work of fiction. Until we started putting the pieces together with Darian and Mykeya."
Kyllean exhaled a low rumble of frustration and scrubbed the furred heels of his hands over his face. "Does the book give any more ideas of what we might be up against? Ways we can counteract the treasures or keep the natural disasters from occurring?"
"We had the same questions when we realized the possibilities. Unfortunately, the last time I read the journal was before the curse, and that's all I remember." Islyne glanced at Conall with an uncomfortable glance that firmed into a look of determined resolve. "So we decided to return to the Winter Palace to get the book. But it's gone."
"Gone?"
"It's not in the library. Someone must have snuck in and taken it sometime between when we left and when we sent a squadron back to guard the palace."
"Was anything else missing?" Suspicion tightened in his voice, and even if the cloak concealed his scowl from Islyne and Conall, there was no doubt his attention had centered itself on Conall.
"Nothing obvious," Islyne answered, angling herself between her brother and her fiancé with a warning glare of her own. "The palace wasn't ransacked or looted."
Leandra held her breath for a second, wondering if she should intervene.
But Kyllean's posture softened, and he shifted his focus back to the problem at hand. "So someone came looking specifically for that book."
"Yes," Conall answered, then dropped his head ruefully.
