HE LIFTED the wet cloth again to the warlord"s shoulders, rubbing at

the skin, blood running down the bare back.

The water in the wash bucket was steaming hot, and Michael

wrung out the cloth again and again, turning the water red.

The warlord stood patiently, naked, in the small but deep wooden

tub as Michael returned to his task. The blood spatter had gotten under

the armor, under the vestments beneath, soaking clean through all of

the layers and sticking to Shinjaro"s skin like body paint.

Shinjaro himself had sustained no wounds. Thank God, Michael

thought. He squeezed out the washcloth again and began using the

second wash bucket of clean, hot water that had been brought to the

bathing room.

He finished washing the warlord"s back and moved to the front to

start on his torso and arms.
