Chapter Fifteen

“Congratulations!” Hope beamed at the switchboard as if she could see Mr. Cello’s face there. “I knew you could find a scholarship! You can finish school and go on to become a famous cellist.”

“I’ll dedicate my first performance at Carnegie Hall to you. To Hope, who always had faith in me.” Mr. Cello’s deep voice quavered for a moment. “When I thought I might as well quit, it was you who kept me going.”

She pressed her hand to her heart. It felt good to have her efforts appreciated. “What are you doing to celebrate?”

“I’m going out with my friends.” She heard a roar of voices in the background, cheering Mr. Cello’s success. “In fact, they’re here now. But I had to let you know. Oops.” The phone hit something; he’d dropped it, and when he picked it up again he was laughing. “They’re carrying me off. I’ll talk to you later!”

“Okay,” she said, but the line was already dead.

Well. That was great. Mr. Cello had his scholarship. Score one for the good guys.

Madam Nainci was rattling around in her bedroom, then she opened her door and swept into the room. In an electric blue pair of pants, a blue and red plaid blazer, and a red neck scarf, she made Hope blink with her vibrancy. “I am late getting up this morning.” But she was humming and smiling.

It was good to see Madam Nainci so happy. “Were you out with Mr. Wealaworth?”

“No, my darling, last night was the dance with Gregor.”

“Gregor?” Who was Gregor? What had happened to Mr. Wealaworth? Hope glanced at his empty desk. What had happened to Mr. Wealaworth? He hadn’t been in all day.

“I met Gregor yesterday at the grocery store.” Madam Nainci bustled to the coat rack and started the lengthy process of wrapping herself in her outer garments. “He is a beautiful man, so polite, he bought me tea at the Greek Tearoom, and baklava, which was very good, and we went to the club and we danced!”

“That sounds wonderful.” Hope was confused. “But what about Mr. Wealaworth?”

“He is a beautiful man, too.” Madam Nainci shrugged. “Life is good. Two men make it twice as easy to have a date.”

Hope chuckled. Trust Madam Nainci to find her own way to happiness.

“Now, I must go to the grocery store!” Madam Nainci tossed her purple fringed muffler around her neck in a grand gesture and turned toward the door.

“I thought you went yesterday.”

“I forgot to shop.”

Hope laughed again as Madam Nainci stalked out, queen of all she surveyed, and went back to work on physics. She understood the problems now, but each one was harder than the next until, by the end of the page, she stopped and massaged the tight muscles of her neck. If only Griswald was here to help.

Of course, as irked as he had been last night, he might not be willing.

Automatically, she loosened her ponytail, finger-combed her hair and prepared to put it back up.

Instead, she remembered the way Griswald had looked at her when her tresses flew wild around her shoulders, and she left it down.
