Chapter 6

When Sam woke up alone in Jack’s bed, she didn’t feel disappointed like she had the previous time. Instead, she threw on her underwear and one of Jack’s T-shirts before bolting toward the kitchen to see what he’d cooked up for her this morning. She could smell bacon and coffee, and those two scents along with the thought of another slice of brownie was more than enough to lure her from bed.

She snuck up behind him in the kitchen, wrapping her arms around him in a big bear hug. “This is really sweet of you. But you better be careful spoiling me like this. The next time I come back to Pine Lake I’m going to expect the same kind of treatment, which might not go over very well with your future girlfriends.”

Surprisingly, his body tensed up at her gentle teasing. When he turned around, his face was closed up, and she had the distinct feeling she’d said something wrong, although she didn’t know what it was.

She helped him set the table and dish out the food, and then they ate in silence for a few minutes before Sam asked the question which had been nagging at her. “How come you’re single?” Jack was a great catch, as last night’s brownie-baking and this morning’s breakfast indicated. She couldn’t believe no one had snatched him up yet.

“I had a few serious relationships, but nothing felt right. They weren’t what I was looking for.” He shrugged like it was no big deal, but there was a sadness in his voice she hadn’t heard often before.

“What are you looking for?”

“Someone I can have fun with. Someone who makes every day better. Someone who inspires me to be a better person.” He continued eating his eggs, and Sam assumed he was finished until he said quietly, “Someone like you, Sam.”

Sam nearly choked on her bacon. Someone like her? His description didn’t sound like her. Well, maybe the having fun part did. They’d always been able to have fun together, even as kids. But she would never have thought she made Jack’s day better. Or made him want to be a better person. It all sounded…intense. And definitely not something she wanted or was ready for. Her whole life was in upheaval. Now Jack was saying things that were a lot more serious than what she’d expected from a holiday fling.

“I’ve been waiting for you and Mason to break up. I should have made a move sooner, but I chickened out and then Mason snatched you up. Now we’re both available. You could move back here—”

“I got offered a job in Chicago,” she blurted before he could continue imagining their future lives.

He stopped and stared, as though she’d said something in a foreign language. “Chicago?”

Sam nodded. “Remember One World United, the company I interned with my senior year of college? They offered me a full-time position.”

“And you took it?” His face had lost the excited, hopeful look it’d had a few minutes ago, and Sam realized she wanted to bring it back.
