Chapter 6
When Sam woke up alone in Jackâs bed, she didnât feel disappointed like she had the previous time. Instead, she threw on her underwear and one of Jackâs T-shirts before bolting toward the kitchen to see what heâd cooked up for her this morning. She could smell bacon and coffee, and those two scents along with the thought of another slice of brownie was more than enough to lure her from bed.
She snuck up behind him in the kitchen, wrapping her arms around him in a big bear hug. âThis is really sweet of you. But you better be careful spoiling me like this. The next time I come back to Pine Lake Iâm going to expect the same kind of treatment, which might not go over very well with your future girlfriends.â
Surprisingly, his body tensed up at her gentle teasing. When he turned around, his face was closed up, and she had the distinct feeling sheâd said something wrong, although she didnât know what it was.
She helped him set the table and dish out the food, and then they ate in silence for a few minutes before Sam asked the question which had been nagging at her. âHow come youâre single?â Jack was a great catch, as last nightâs brownie-baking and this morningâs breakfast indicated. She couldnât believe no one had snatched him up yet.
âI had a few serious relationships, but nothing felt right. They werenât what I was looking for.â He shrugged like it was no big deal, but there was a sadness in his voice she hadnât heard often before.
âWhat are you looking for?â
âSomeone I can have fun with. Someone who makes every day better. Someone who inspires me to be a better person.â He continued eating his eggs, and Sam assumed he was finished until he said quietly, âSomeone like you, Sam.â
Sam nearly choked on her bacon. Someone like her? His description didnât sound like her. Well, maybe the having fun part did. Theyâd always been able to have fun together, even as kids. But she would never have thought she made Jackâs day better. Or made him want to be a better person. It all soundedâ¦intense. And definitely not something she wanted or was ready for. Her whole life was in upheaval. Now Jack was saying things that were a lot more serious than what sheâd expected from a holiday fling.
âIâve been waiting for you and Mason to break up. I should have made a move sooner, but I chickened out and then Mason snatched you up. Now weâre both available. You could move back hereââ
âI got offered a job in Chicago,â she blurted before he could continue imagining their future lives.
He stopped and stared, as though sheâd said something in a foreign language. âChicago?â
Sam nodded. âRemember One World United, the company I interned with my senior year of college? They offered me a full-time position.â
âAnd you took it?â His face had lost the excited, hopeful look itâd had a few minutes ago, and Sam realized she wanted to bring it back.
