CHAPTER ELEVEN

VIVIAN

“He’s perfect, Todd.” I hand the baby over to his dad after weighing him. This is one of those times when I could stand all day just to watch the look in a father’s eyes when they have a few short minutes to bond with their child before taking them to their mother. Normally, I would follow them, make sure the mother is comfortable with breastfeeding, guide her into it, answer any questions she may have. In this case, this little guy is their fifth son. Monica, the mother, is a professional at it by now. How she does it, I’ll never know.

“Yes, he is. Thanks for everything. He’s our last one, you know,” he tells me without taking his eyes off his son.

“I heard that, and it’s my pleasure. Take care of yourselves,” I say, start to clean up my mess, and watch him place the baby in the bassinet. It’s been a fairly slow day. Only one delivery. I’m caught up and ready to get my ass out of here.

Now that he’s leaned up against the wall with his legs crossed at the ankles, his hands tucked in his pockets, and a smug look on his face that says “hurry your ass up,” I find myself stopping in the middle of the hallway; and when our gazes finally do lock, a gasp escapes my mouth. He’s stripping me right down to my soul and forcing me to see what he sees through his eyes. I’m the seed to his rocky ground, the sunshine after the rain. Except, he’s failing to see the root growing from that seed. The one he planted there months ago.

I’m absorbing every bit of him. The way he stands there with a devious smirk, a malicious expression, and nudging me toward him with his vicious smile. There’s something clearly wrong, though. Jude has worry lines etched on his forehead, frown lines at the corners of his eyes. I want to know what it is that has Jude so troubled, and yet for one night, I’m going to let those troubles go. Unless it’s life threatening, of course, or they found this bitch and I can crack her head open. If not, then we are so not talking. I can see he agrees in the way his piercing
