NINETEEN

Jake’s place looks inviting with its porchway of double doors, with a warm light shining in the narrow gap between the two entrances. ‘Hello, Bill; cold eh?’ he says, seeing me shiver on entering the hot atmosphere of his room. ‘Have a cup of tea?’ he asks.

‘Sure, Jake,’ I tell him. ‘Where you off to, tonight?’ I ask.

‘I thought we might scout around, Bill. Then visit Ben’s place to see him. He said that he would like to see you, especially as you might be finishing at the deckchairs soon,’ Jake said.

‘We’ll go into a pub or something first,’ I tell Jake. ‘It’s a bit cold to stroll around town for too long.’

‘OK, as you like, Bill,’ Jake agrees.

Jake passes me a cup of hot tea. ‘I see you’ve been going about with Dave a bit lately, Bill. You’re keen on him, yeah?’ he asks.

‘I like him, yes,’ I tell him.

‘Is he getting his divorce through yet?’ Jake asks. ‘He’ll be wanting to marry that new girl of his before long and be in the muck again,’ says Jake.

‘Dave told me that he won’t remarry when he gets his divorce; not for a long time. He wants to study; visit London and all things like that,’ I tell him.

‘He’s a girl’s man you know, Bill. It’s sensible to keep to your own kind,’ Jake tells me.

‘I like both of them, Jake; and Barbara, from what Dave tells me, likes me and finds me interesting,’ I tell him, annoyed at his comment. ‘I reckon normals and gays can mix all right on a social level or any level,’ I tell him, as an extra thought. ‘Everyone’s similar in their make-up, once a person gets over the morals and taboos of their cultures and upbringing,’ I preach to Jake.

‘That may be so, Bill, but you’ll find that normals don’t like it to be known that they associate with what they call “queers”. That’s what I’ve found out in Northport. They accept it here if it’s undercover and nothing is seen to be happening. Half the town are queer,’ Jake continues. ‘Most people know it and are sensible about it. They don’t kick up a fuss. I’ve noticed certain people belonging to the town hall, queer as coots; and one or two of the local coppers, camping around the streets. They are part of the whole set-up. But I keep myself out of all that, Bill. I don’t like to mix my work with my private life. It doesn’t do, but face-to-face with me and they don’t bat an eyelid. Suits me,’ Jake finishes his long exposition. He speaks from years of experience in the town and he is a practical sort of bloke, so I take him at his word.

Jake is a bit of an all-rounder. Apart from his male sexual activities he is apparently an attraction to women, mainly married ones. Frequently he brings one back to his knocking-shop bedroom, and does the necessary job to each one’s satisfaction. His styles of sex play and sexual intercourse are not of the regular sort.
