Fourteen

The first thing I noticed was a siren, a slow rising ‘whooooop - whooooop - whooooop’. I knew that sound, but for the moment I couldn’t place it. Didn’t matter much anyway as I took stock of where the hell I actually was!

I was sitting in a big chair in front of a control panel with about a million flashing lights and buttons on it. Turning to my left I spotted Holly at a similar panel next to me. This had to be JodyWorld - but JodyWorld was never like this! Holly was wearing a sort of dark red jumpsuit-thing - like a uniform. A familiar uniform, but I couldn’t place it straight away. A voice from behind me interrupted my thoughts.

“Helmsman - Jody - evasive manoeuvres. They’ve launched another photon torpedo. Just wait ‘til I have time to find out what’s going on!”

A quick look behind me revealed Lisa in a similar get-up to Holly, sitting in a huge chair on a raised bit of the floor. There seemed to be semi-circle of control panels behind her, manned by people doing incomprehensible things. Right. Evasive manoeuvres. How on Earth did I do evasive manoeuvres?

I pushed buttons more or less at random. As I did this, I noticed the huge window in front of me, full of what looked like stars. As I watched, the stars shimmered - and a spaceship appeared. Not just any old spaceship. I knew what this was - a Klingon Bird of Prey! It was de-cloaking as I watched. Now I knew where we were! This wasn’t JodyWorld - this was the Starship Enterprise!

No more time for thought. The Klingon ship fired the expected photon torpedo. I played the buttons in front of me like a concert pianist playing Rachmaninoff while under the influence of recreational pharmaceuticals. Slowly we turned away from the ship in front of us. Somehow I knew it wasn’t going to be enough. Their torpedo hit us somewhere.

The whole deck jumped and shook under us. The lights went out, then came back on, then dimmed to about half power. There were huge showers of sparks out of more than half the control panels. Curiously, nobody was hurt and all the panels and controls continued to operate.

Captain Lisa said,” Helm! Take us out of here, ahead warp factor seven.”

“Warp engines are off line,” said Holly, sitting next to me. “Shields are down to fifteen percent.”

“Evasive manoeuvres - full impulse power. Take us round and over. Prepare photon torpedoes and all phaser banks,” called Lisa from behind me.

The Klingons chose that moment to launch another torpedo of their own. This time I was ready. More random-seeming button managed to make the torpedo miss us. Lisa had more orders.

“Concentrate phaser banks on their upper control deck. See if we can weaken their shield enough to let the torpedo through. Fire all phaser banks on my mark.”

“Captain,” said Holly. “I am required to advise you that a full phaser strike at this time will lower our power reserves to below ten percent.
