Within ICE, the Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) directorate arrests and removes aliens (people who belong to a foreign country) who are in the United States illegally. The ERO divisions include Field Operations, Enforcement, Custody Management, Removal, Health Service Corps, and Operations Support. The Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) arm investigates cross-border criminal cases such as financial crimes, money laundering, commercial fraud, intellectual property theft, cybercrimes, human rights violations, human smuggling and trafficking, narcotics and weapons smuggling, and transnational gang activity. HSI is organized into a number of divisions such as Domestic Operations, International Operations, Investigative Programs, the Office of Intelligence, and the Operational Technology and Cyber Division.

U.S. SECRET SERVICE SPECIAL AGENTS

The U.S. Secret Service, which is an agency of the Department of Homeland Security, provides protection for public figures and conducts federal criminal investigations. The individuals it protects include the president, vice president, their families, visiting heads of state, and other designated individuals. Secret Service special agents make travel arrangements and oversee security measures at any location that the protected person or group may visit.

CAREER SPOTLIGHT: COAST GUARD INVESTIGATIVE SERVICE SPECIAL AGENT

The U.S. Coast Guard is the branch of the Department of Homeland Security charged with enforcing the law in ports, on waterways, and along the coast. Within the Coast Guard, the Coast Guard Investigative Service (CGIS) specializes in criminal investigations and supporting regular Coast Guard operations. Established in 1915, the CGIS comprises military special agents on active duty, civilian special agents, and special agents who belong to the Coast Guard Reserve.

CGIS special agents investigate crimes that occur within the maritime jurisdiction. These could include an assault that occurs on a boat, an illegal charter boat operation, or falsifying records. Their responsibilities include criminal operations related to smuggling drugs, smuggling illegal migrants, and environmental crimes such as illegally dumping pollution into waterways. The CGIS often cooperates with other federal agencies and international agencies in major investigations.

Like other federal agents, CGIS special agents undergo training at federal facilities. As federal law enforcement officers, they have the authority to carry firearms, serve warrants, and make arrests. CGIS special agents work out of eight regional offices and 35 Resident Agent offices across the United States. Agents are expected to take on a wide variety of responsibilities in a job that requires extensive travel across the Coast Guard’s vast jurisdiction.
