The opinions run the gamut from full-tilt adulation to unapologetic bashing.

Whedon’s tweets and public commentary on Gamergate are a further example of activism that strengthens the case for Whedon’s feminism. An anonymous poster on 4chan sent out the call that next time she came to a conference, female video game developer Zoe Quinn should be given “a crippling injury that’s never going to fully heal . . . a good solid injury to the knees. I’d say a brain damage, but we don’t want to make it so she ends up too retarded to fear us.”[65] Whedon was quick to comment with regard to the sexist behavior of trolls against women on the Internet, how such behavior always surprises him because he wishes we were past that point:

Every time . . . I’m stunned. I’m like, Really? That’s like, I don’t believe in airplanes. It’s like, What century are you from? I don’t get it. So usually I’m shocked, then occasionally amused, then occasionally extremely not amused, but once I get over the shock, it’s very clear that misogyny in our own culture—and not just where they perform genital mutilation and marry off 10-year-olds—runs so deep.[66]
