Chapter Twelve

“I really need a win.” Mecca let her head drop to the wall, where it connected with a thud.

She wanted more than a thud. She wanted to beat her head until Teresa’s scathing words were erased from her psyche. Where she didn’t have to think about the litany of your fault, and how could you, and you’ll be hearing from my lawyer.

She highly doubted the latter would come to pass, because the camp was not at fault for Gerard’s medical problem nor did Mecca waste any time in notifying his mother once his condition became known. But with a woman of Mrs. Harlacher’s…fervor…one couldn’t be too sure.

Carter was there for her. He’d stood by her side through the whole embarrassing incident, speaking up occasionally on her behalf. Although she’d had to hold up a hand to stop him from coming to her rescue when Teresa Harlacher not only stepped into her personal bubble of space but popped it, her nose literally an inch from Mecca’s.

Mecca could understand her upset. If Gerard was her son, she would hate to see his eczema acting up in such a serious and painful way, enough to cut short his summer camp experience. But she liked to think she would know better than to blame the camp director for the problem. The camp director, the park manager, and might as well throw in the entire state of North Carolina while Teresa was at it.

Mecca dreaded the negative press. In town, speculation had already spread about her, as tales of her misfortunes had gone around and turned into a whirlwind. She’d caught a hint of a few things said, things that implied she might not be competent enough to handle a large job like Camp Lionheart.

Gio Raleigh, the head of the Raleigh clan, would have laughed at the gossip. He would have told her once again that she shouldn’t be bothered by what other people thought of her. It wasn’t her business and it said more about them than it did her.

Mecca had grown up hearing those words over and over again, and she thought she’d taken them to heart. Apparently, there was a chink in her armor.

She heard Carter’s footsteps approaching her seconds before his large palm fell between her shoulder blades, rubbing lightly to knead at the tension. “Try to breathe.”

“I’m breathing. Trust me,” she muttered.

His touch did wonderful things to her, but it wasn’t enough to get her out of her head and away from those niggling doubts still telling her she was cursed. Cursed and doomed to fail and that she’d made a mistake by blowing off the sure-thing position in Jacksonville.

“I’m doing the best I can,” she continued and let her head drop again.

“Yeah, I know you are,” Carter supplied, his touch rhythmic and soothing. “Look, I know just the thing to cheer you up. Come on, get in the car.” He moved away to give her room.

She shook her head. “I don’t want to.”

“Mecca. Get in the car. We’re going for a drive down the coast.
