Jack and The Box
I’m sure you’re getting pretty curious about this roommate of mine. What can I tell you about Jack Divine? That’s really his name, for starters. People ask him all the time. It’s on his birth certificate and everything.
Jack is my favorite person in the whole wide world. I love him with all my heart. He’s the only guy I ever dated that I was able to remain friends with when the relationship didn’t quite pan out. I don’t keep in touch with any of the other guys, aside from the occasional online snooping to find out if a piano mysteriously fell on them while they were strolling down the sidewalk. Jack might be the only guy that I didn’t put that particular curse on, and there have been a few. I don’t know why I’m so hung up on a piano falling on my exes. It must’ve been all those cartoons I watched as a kid. It hasn’t happened to any of them yet, but you know how exceptionally patient I can be.
That online snooping did reveal something pretty weird, though. Nearly every one of those guys married the next woman they dated directly after me; even my high school boyfriend did. It’s just like that movie Good Luck Chuck…without Dane Cook or the penguins. But I’m getting sidetracked. Let’s get back to Jack, because he helped shape the person that I am, and I’m the storyteller.
Jack Divine is from a little village in southern Wisconsin called New Glarus. It was settled by Swiss immigrants, so most of the buildings in town look like chalets. It’s insanely cute and pretty as a postcard. Jack grew up seeing Amish buggies and horses parked outside the grocery store right next to pickup trucks and station wagons. And check this out—this wholesome little town is located right on highway 69. That is the absolute truth. Google it if you don’t believe me. I wonder how often those road signs mysteriously go missing.
I’ve gone with Jack to his hometown a handful of times, usually in late spring and early autumn, since I’m in Texas all summer and winter sucks even worse in Wisconsin than it does in Illinois. There’s a state park set on rolling hills that’s incredible to hike through, but what really puts this town on the map is the New Glarus Brewing Company. It’s the first brewery in all of America to be founded and operated by a woman, one marketing genius named Deborah Carey. That’s pretty badass, if you ask me. It gets even cooler. Her husband Daniel, the Master Brewer, has a quote I love: ‘Some people paint, some sing, others write…I brew.’ His wife may be a genius, but the man is an artist. I’m not much of a beer drinker, but I will drink the hell out of their Spotted Cow. They call it a ‘farmhouse ale’ but I call it a little bit of heaven. It’s delicious, and they only sell their brews in Wisconsin.
