Chapter Twelve

Jeremiah

I should have been happy that we were finally having a meeting on something other than my day off, but the tension in the room was so thick it was nearly unbearable. At the front of the room, the same too-smiling ass that’d given us “the night off” so he could train his own crews, next to him a bunch of cocky-looking mofos who would probably hurl at the sight of blood, let alone tissue, and at the end, Todd, who looked weary as hell.

Dude droned on about the generous severance package they were offering, and I wanted to roll my eyes. But two weeks for every year of service was pretty damn sweet. That was two months for Will and eighteen weeks for me, on top of cashing out my unused sick and vacation time. Maybe I could afford to get away before jumping into the next new thing.

“While we are not requiring two weeks’ notice to cash in your unused sick and leave time now, in two weeks we will proceed with layoffs as necessary, which will naturally impact those things,” old boy was saying.

Wouldn’t be an issue. I’d give them my two weeks at the end of this shift and move on to the next one. I felt bad, though, for the young cats who weren’t going to get much. Todd had been clear that layoffs were coming, but if you only had a year on the job, two weeks’ severance did jack-all for you.

Next to me, Will tapped his leg, but not that super-nervous hyper shit he did when he was really pressed. It was more of an is-it-time-to-go type of tap. He’d already accepted a new job in Alexandria, they’d given their notice to the landlord, and he and Terri were moving on.

I wished like hell I was that confident in my plans. I hadn’t heard anything since that disastrous interview, and I hadn’t followed up with the last school either. My distraction level was through the roof: between my family, Collin, Chucky, and work, my off-days had been a bunch of notagoddamnthing.

It was all bullshit, and I knew it, but I’d worry about that after this shift was over. Since Will and I were on duty, we went out to the van to check supplies and that everything was in order. Things had slowed down some, and throughout the day we got callouts for minor things, primarily dealing with bored kids trying to create something to do and paying the price for it.

Around six we were mired in downtown traffic, and I could tell Will was over it. Close to putting on the siren so we could drive the shoulder, but I stared at him until he sat back.

Dispatch came on just as I started to waver in my resolve. “All units, have a situation at a high school. Allergic reax, potentially fatal. Unit needed at Lancaster High ASAP.”

Fuck, Lancaster was the stop ahead of Will. Normally thirty seconds to get off the exit, but would be close to five minutes in this traffic.
