Chapter 8

Caleb responded with news about Nattie. He assured Amanda that her sister was holding up as well as could be expected.

Nattie’s connection to Emma Rose had grown stronger the last few days. Instead of the infant drifting away, her presence had been more profound. Dreams about her baby were a nightly event, and Nattie was convinced they were a sign that the baby was alive.

Amanda was relieved that the feelings her sister received weren’t alarming, as she didn’t want to think of her distressed. Nattie was in emotional agony already. She’d told Caleb that she sensed her baby was lost and confused, but she wasn’t physically harmed.

Amanda prayed that was true. She didn’t know what she’d do if she discovered otherwise. There was no way to be certain what had happened to her infant niece.

There was only one thing to do, and that was to continue—to find out what happened to Emma Rose.

The following morning, Jake and Amanda went for a jog. Sticking to their usual routine was the best option. It was another lovely day in a neighborhood that seemed more and more like fantasy. Living in such idyllic conditions seemed more unreal the longer Amanda stayed there.

Jake wore a gray shirt and shorts, showing off his muscular legs. He kept a stride or so ahead of Amanda, giving her a nice view of his tight rear—not that she was looking. After the gala, there had been no way to go back to how things were before. The mood between them had shifted.

Amanda was acutely aware of Jake’s masculinity and of her sexual attraction to him. She reminded herself that was all it was—although she was less convinced than before. As she watched Jake run in front of her, Amanda imagined what it would be like to really be married to him.

She shouldn’t let her mind go there but didn’t seem to be able to stop it. The barrier to having a permanent relationship wasn’t all because of Jake. She knew herself, and had long ago faced that she had issues with long-term relationships.

In her career, Amanda could work on a team. That was why she’d been successful in the Air Force and why she was an asset at Black Swan. Yet the very strength that made her good military personnel prevented her from placing her trust in one man.

Amanda was strong and independent. For her, duty came first, then family. Her intimate relationships seemed to be last on the list. And there was another issue. She’d been hurt and repeatedly rejected by men she’d been intimate with. It wasn’t that she wasn’t physically attractive.

But it seemed civilian men didn’t want to hook up with a military woman with attitude. It offended their macho image or something. Yet Amanda couldn’t find it within herself to change. That was just how she was, how she’d been, ever since she could recall.

Finding the right man was not an easy feat. Amanda had a concept of her dream guy, yet she had her doubts about that choice.
