OCTOBER 31, 2001—HANDWRITTEN LETTER

TO JAKE FROM KAREN

Dearest Jake,

I wish you were not so angry with me, but I understand your feelings. And, of course, you’re right. I’ve been foolish. I just couldn’t bring myself to admit that I might be sick. It didn’t seem possible, and I would not allow myself to consider the truth and its implications. Please forgive me. I cannot bear to have you so upset. And I do love you so. You and your sister are more precious to me than I can possibly express. I know that this may be hard for you to believe sometimes, given the demands I put on you. Now that my stupid refusal to seek medical help threatens my health and your security, it may be even harder for you to know the depths of my love. Have faith in it, though. Never doubt it. It is my deepest promise and gift to you.

I have faith. Faith that you will buck up and hang in there during my treatment. I have faith that God will somehow look after our little family. I have faith that He will give me strength to persevere in the face of this physical challenge. And Jake, I will persevere. Do not doubt for a moment that I will be back to my old self, being a pain in your neck, quicker than you think. It will not be easy, and I will need your help.

I’m writing you now only because I anticipate that a combination of drugs and discomfort will keep me under the weather for the next short while. I didn’t want to miss this chance to let you know that I love you and believe in you. The way you reacted to your honor mistake made me very proud of you. You are becoming a fine young man, the kind of person your father and I hoped you would become. Good luck in the dormitory. Eat well. Get plenty of sleep. I’ll see you soon.

Much love,

Mom
