Chapter 16

One week later, before Jade and Clyde headed out to relieve the midnight shift officers who were surveilling LeHar, Ami Weaver from CSI headquarters in Hobbs, called.

“Hi, Ami. Hope you have some information for me,” Jade said.

Clyde sat in a chair near Jade, and she pressed the speaker button on the phone so he could hear too.

“Yes, I do have a few things to tell you.” Ami’s voice came through loud and clear. “The DNA on the hair at the second crime scene matched the DNA on the glass that was from your suspect, Carl LeHar.”

Jade looked at Clyde and they did a high-five.

“The tumbler and Styrofoam cup tested positive for Rohypnol. The street name is Roofies. It’s not manufactured in the US and is usually shipped from Mexico.”

“Rod Sanford and Chelsea Bates were drugged with Rohypnol?” Jade asked.

“Yes. The glass Carl LeHar was using did not contain any drugs, so we can assume he didn’t have any drugs in his system. We ran the partial print off the windowsill, and Carl LeHar’s through the AFIS database, but had no hits on him. We ran LeHar through the New Mexico fingerprint database and found nothing.”

After they ended the call, Jade looked at Clyde and smiled wide.

“So the DNA from his hair and the DNA from the glass tie LeHar to the baby’s room,” Clyde said.

“To quote Patrick, the noose is getting tighter!” Jade said.

Before they left the office, Clyde said, “Patrick told me to take the file on the murder case I’ve been working on. We’d like to get a fresh pair of eyes to look at it.”

“Yeah, sure. I’d be happy to take a look at what you got.” Jade poked her head into Patrick’s office. “Hey, just popping in to give you an update.” She briefed him on the call from Ami. “Clyde and I are headed out to relieve the night shift.”

Patrick nodded. “Okay, thanks for the update.”

On the way out the door, Jade stopped and greeted Autumn who was heading into work. “Hey.”

“Hey, yourself, detective.” She gave Jade a sly grin.

“Want to have dinner tonight?” Jade asked.

“Sure, why don’t we order pizza and eat at your place?”

“Sounds good. Is seven okay?”

“Yep. See you then,” Autumn said.

Jade caught up with Clyde. They drove to Becket Street and relieved the two officers who were watching the LeHar residence.

“Have you ever been married, Jade?”

“No, you?” She knew he was divorced, Patrick told her, but she didn’t want Clyde to know she knew.

“I’m divorced with two kids.”

“I’m sorry. Was it a hard divorce?”

“Yeah. My ex-wife couldn’t handle the hours that I kept and never being home on time and stuff like that. She wanted someone with a nine-to-five job, I guess. In the end, I don’t think we had much in common anymore. It was especially hard on the kids, my not being around much, but it’s worse now that we’re divorced. I can’t always stick to the visitation schedule. If I had known then what I know now, I don’t think I would have gotten hitched.
