NIDHI

As I wait in the car for Ani, so many thoughts buzz around in my head. What a long day it has been. I have had a fight with my fiancé and here I am waiting in the middle of the night for someone I have barely known for two months, who has chased after his drunk girlfriend halfway across town to ensure she is fine. And, in comparison, there’s Manoj who can’t even be bothered to see if I made it home safe. The more I think about it, the angrier I get with Manoj. How could he abandon me like that and not come after me? So what if I had marched out—he could have easily followed me. If he had, I would probably not have called Aniket.

And good lord—what a girl Trish is. She is stunning. No doubt about that. I can see why Aniket is crazy about her. But boy—she has called me a bitch, and she hardly knows me. I don’t even hold it against her. There is an element of truth in what she said—that I have indeed hijacked her evening with her boyfriend. Also, she is so darn young. I try and think back to my twenties. I was very different from Trish. There is no way I would have called anyone a bitch, ever. Not behind their back, not to their face. Not ever. I would rather shut them out and not think about them.

I glance at my watch now and wonder what Ani is doing. He has been gone more than fifteen minutes. It shouldn’t have taken him this long. Poor Ani—first he had to pick me up, and then he has to handle his drunk girlfriend and her friend.

Ani emerges from the building then, and he looks tired.

‘So sorry about that, Nidhi. I apologize for Trish. She has no control over what she does and says when she starts drinking. I am sorry.’

He looks so contrite that I want to give him a hug and tell him it’s okay, but I hold back.

‘Hey—it’s not your fault. And I haven’t taken it to heart. Don’t even worry about it. After all, she does have a point. I did spoil your evening with her,’ I reassure him, trying to make him feel better.

‘Well, I hated all the noise and smoke in the pub anyway, and your call was the perfect excuse to get away. I did it for selfish reasons, not to pick you up,’ he grins.

‘But you did rescue me. Looks like your entire day has consisted of rescuing drunk women. In my defence, though, I wasn’t drunk.’

‘No you certainly weren’t, and yes, you are right. No more drunk women for me, at least not today.’

‘A pity! I was going to ask you if
