Chapter 11

“Don’t worry about this so much,” Jen comforted Sarah over her online dating woes. Nate nodded next to her, the three of them walking to Sarah’s usual yoga studio. “The Sarah Young from first year wouldn’t even consider online dating, let alone saying no to her mother’s matchmaking.”

Sarah blushed, and Jen swatted her lightly on the arm. “We’ll work on you taking compliments,” she added. “And who knows, maybe the program Chandra installed for your AIVA is working!”

It had been a month since they first installed the extension on her AIVA, a week or so since Chandra last tweaked it again. Wesley’s enthusiasm for the program was waning, replaced by impatience, which had not been good for Chandra. Now not only did he have to fine-tune the program, but he also had to answer a million and one dummy questions.

“He’ll check on it again for me today,” Sarah replied. She and Jen were taking a 7:30 a.m. class, so the street was still pretty empty. The studio was in Shoreditch, and now that Jen could stay with Nate, they were finally taking classes together regularly again. It had taken Sarah a year to find a studio she liked and could afford.

“It’s okay if you don’t want to use it, too,” Nate added. He had woken up to walk them over, which was sweet of him. Now that they had spent more time together, he was finally comfortable sharing his opinions with Sarah. “As smart as the idea is, I think some things shouldn’t be left to AIVA or computers. It should remain a tool, not a crutch.”

Jen beamed at Nate, and Sarah’s head hurt from hearing such a philosophical question in the early morning. Nate was the most practical person she knew, and it was interesting he disliked using AIVA for certain things. Jen had revealed he didn’t think AIVA should be used for romance or making life decisions. He clearly didn’t want to say it to Sarah’s face, something that Jen had no trouble with.

But perhaps he was right. AIVA shouldn’t be the end-all-be-all solution to things. For Sarah, though, getting her AIVA to swipe and greet matches was acceptable.

“I’ll be at the gym. Let me know when your class is over.” Nate leaned down to kiss Jen before crossing the road. Sarah had to tug at Jen so she’d keep walking. She liked to be early to snag her usual spot.

“After you.” A guy with a dimpled smile held the door open for Sarah and Jen as they arrived at the studio at the same time. Sarah nodded at him, a polite smile on her face, letting Jen go first before stepping in.

“I think that guy likes you,” Jen whispered as they stowed their things in the lockers, her eyes flickering back to the door. Sarah turned and saw Dimple Guy holding the door for another group of new arrivals. She looked back at Jen, who shrugged and added, “I still think he does.”

Sarah shook her head. She used to trust Jen’s intuition all the time.
