WAR

“You idiot,” Fancy scolded, while medical professionals hurried around the room, checking monitors and writing notes on clipboards. Another group of nurses rushed in, each of them with big smiles on their faces and cheerful greetings for my mother who had just woken up from the dead.

She scowled at all of them, weakly brushing away their attempts to check her temperature, blood pressure, and who knew what else. The entire time, she glared at me, in much the same way she had when I’d been busted for breaking her beloved flower vase. I could get a D on a test or get busted sneaking out to parties with no repercussion, but break something my mother loved, and I knew to run.

I felt like running now. Except I couldn’t because I had to tell her that she was going to have to spend the rest of her life without my father.

The urge to run only intensified when I looked at Bliss and heard myself saying I was marrying someone else. The words may as well have cut all the tendons in my legs because I couldn’t move, even though the room felt like it had no air.

Concentrating on Fancy seemed the more pressing matter in the moment, so I picked up her hand. “Just let them help you, Mom. You’ve been in a coma.”

“So I’ve been told.”

I bit back a smile at her feistiness, even if was as scratchy as sandpaper. Apparently even knocking on death’s door couldn’t quell that. “Just rest.”

“I’ll rest when you find your brain. You aren’t marrying Siren.”

I swallowed, my smile falling. “I have to.”

“Says who?”

I glanced at Bliss, and my heart fucking broke all over again. Because instead of the hate she should have had for me after I’d just told her she couldn’t ever be more than a mistress, she had her hand gently on my back and her face full of concern. Not for Fancy. But for me.

I didn’t deserve her love. Not even an ounce of it, and yet she was there, caring about me even when I’d done everything so fucking wrong. “I made a deal.”

Bliss frowned. “You mean your dad made a deal.”

I shook my head. “Gus is your dealer.”

“I know.”

Shock punched through me. “You know?”

“Yes. I had the displeasure of his company earlier where he decided to lay his cards on the table.”

I wanted to drag her into my arms and hold her so tight she could never leave. Except I knew I didn’t have the right after what I’d agreed to do. I shoved my hands deep into the pockets of my jeans. “Well, you don’t need to worry about him anymore. He’s wiped your debt, as long as I agree to marry his daughter.”

Her mouth dropped open. “That’s insane. You aren’t doing that. You aren’t throwing your whole life away for me.”

I couldn’t contain it anymore. Before I could even remind myself to keep my hands in my pockets, I grabbed her wrists, pulling her closer. “I’d do it a hundred times over to keep you safe.
