Willow joined them in the sunroom. Raine noted that she sure finished feeding the goats fast. She should have laid in the other direction. From this angle, she could see her parents in the kitchen. The visual of them against the kitchen counter would be forever etched in her brain.
âYou should be on a honeymoon,â Willow said as she and Zoe tied blue curling ribbon at the tops of the bags of green beans.
âAnd, Willow, you should be booking a venue for your wedding. I think we both are waiting for the same thing.â
âWhat do you think Raine is waiting for?â Willow asked. âShe has a man just right for her and she pushes him away at every turn.â
The conversation chased the tired away. She thought about lifting her head and telling them she was right there. Curiosity beat out better judgement.
Zoe ran scissors along the ribbon, making it curl tight to the bag. âHe wouldnât take her anyway. She works hard at keeping everyone an armâs length away, not just him.â
Beads of sweat dripped down Raineâs temples. A shower might be called for both before the hatchling release and after.
âIt nearly killed her just to let us retrieve a few disorientated hatchlings,â Willow said.
âAs if she wants it any other way?â Zoe asked. âShe left my wedding reception.â
Willow said, âThere would be no Turtle Watch without Raine.â
Her father stepped in and rested a shoulder on the doorjamb. âWe will love her unconditionally, even if she is a bitch.â
The sunroom bench shook as Tropical Storm Ernest blew sheets of rain through the screens.
âRaine, wake up.â
Her eyes opened to Chloe shaking her with both hands. âYouâre crying, Raine. Wake up.â
She sat and, blinking, gained her bearings. Tears that had been falling over her temples, now flowed down her cheeks.
Willow followed close behind Chloe. âOh, Raine.â She came and sat with her on the sunroom bench, wrapping an arm around Raineâs shoulder and squeezing. âWhat is it? Youâve been working so hard. Why donât you let Zoe and I do the hatchling release tonight?â
âHow did you knowââ?â The post. Raine realized the answer before she finished the question.
Rubbing both hands over her cheeks, she wiped the tears away. The backs of her eyes still burned, but she would be able to cover for it.
âIâd like some help at the farmerâs market on Thursday, Raine.â Her mother set a giant bowl full of bite-sized squares of watermelon in front of her father on the kitchen table next to a plate of pineapple slices.
âMom.â Zoe sat next to him. âShe is way too busy for any farmerâs market.â
Henry placed a hand on Zoeâs forearm.
Zoe looked at it, then him, and sank in her chair.
Taking Raineâs hand, Willow stood. âWatermelon is your favorite. Come.â
It just made the backs of her eyes burn more, but she followed.
âDo you want to talk about it?â Chloe said.
Raine smiled down at her. âI threw a file at Richard Beckett and crawled halfway on his desk before Chief Osborne pulled me down.
