Willow joined them in the sunroom. Raine noted that she sure finished feeding the goats fast. She should have laid in the other direction. From this angle, she could see her parents in the kitchen. The visual of them against the kitchen counter would be forever etched in her brain.

“You should be on a honeymoon,” Willow said as she and Zoe tied blue curling ribbon at the tops of the bags of green beans.

“And, Willow, you should be booking a venue for your wedding. I think we both are waiting for the same thing.”

“What do you think Raine is waiting for?” Willow asked. “She has a man just right for her and she pushes him away at every turn.”

The conversation chased the tired away. She thought about lifting her head and telling them she was right there. Curiosity beat out better judgement.

Zoe ran scissors along the ribbon, making it curl tight to the bag. “He wouldn’t take her anyway. She works hard at keeping everyone an arm’s length away, not just him.”

Beads of sweat dripped down Raine’s temples. A shower might be called for both before the hatchling release and after.

“It nearly killed her just to let us retrieve a few disorientated hatchlings,” Willow said.

“As if she wants it any other way?” Zoe asked. “She left my wedding reception.”

Willow said, “There would be no Turtle Watch without Raine.”

Her father stepped in and rested a shoulder on the doorjamb. “We will love her unconditionally, even if she is a bitch.”

The sunroom bench shook as Tropical Storm Ernest blew sheets of rain through the screens.

“Raine, wake up.”

Her eyes opened to Chloe shaking her with both hands. “You’re crying, Raine. Wake up.”

She sat and, blinking, gained her bearings. Tears that had been falling over her temples, now flowed down her cheeks.

Willow followed close behind Chloe. “Oh, Raine.” She came and sat with her on the sunroom bench, wrapping an arm around Raine’s shoulder and squeezing. “What is it? You’ve been working so hard. Why don’t you let Zoe and I do the hatchling release tonight?”

“How did you know‍—?” The post. Raine realized the answer before she finished the question.

Rubbing both hands over her cheeks, she wiped the tears away. The backs of her eyes still burned, but she would be able to cover for it.

“I’d like some help at the farmer’s market on Thursday, Raine.” Her mother set a giant bowl full of bite-sized squares of watermelon in front of her father on the kitchen table next to a plate of pineapple slices.

“Mom.” Zoe sat next to him. “She is way too busy for any farmer’s market.”

Henry placed a hand on Zoe’s forearm.

Zoe looked at it, then him, and sank in her chair.

Taking Raine’s hand, Willow stood. “Watermelon is your favorite. Come.”

It just made the backs of her eyes burn more, but she followed.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Chloe said.

Raine smiled down at her. “I threw a file at Richard Beckett and crawled halfway on his desk before Chief Osborne pulled me down.
