Chapter Seven

Caylee awoke with the new dawn light streaking through the bedroom window. She wasn’t surprised to find herself alone in the bed. After they’d napped the day before, they’d gotten up and eaten dinner, then Caylee had called her Aunt Patsy and set up a meeting for this afternoon.

She wasn’t sure whether the little tremor of excitement that raced through her was because she was going to see her aunt today or a residual emotion from making love with Micah.

She rolled over on her back and stared up at the ceiling, her thoughts racing back to those moments with Micah. She’d had a feeling he’d be an amazing lover and she hadn’t been wrong.

He brought his personal intensity to the act and had made her feel as if she were the most important person on the face of the earth.

But she knew that was nothing but an illusion. She told herself that her white-hot desire for him had been driven by the unusually heightened energy that had coursed through her after the kidnapping. He’d made it clear that he liked fast women, and even though she’d acted like one the day before, at heart she wasn’t a fast woman at all. She wanted love and passion in her life, but she also needed promises and a commitment to be truly happy.

She rolled out of bed and grabbed a clean pair of shorts and a T-shirt, then raced across the hall into the bathroom. The scent of coffee chased her, letting her know that Micah was already up and about.

Moments later she stood beneath a hot spray of water and tried not to think about those moments in Micah’s arms. She didn’t want to like him. That first night in the plane she’d been certain she didn’t like him, but her attitude toward him had changed since then.

There were flashes of his sense of humor, hints of a deeply hidden warmth that she found intoxicating.

He was like a surprise wrapped in layer after layer of paper. Each layer torn away revealed a new dimension that only whetted her appetite to get to the next layer.

She turned off the shower, grabbed her towel and turned her thoughts to the day ahead. The evening news hadn’t mentioned new charges being filed against her and Micah. In fact, with a new murder in the headlines and
