Marcion

Athanasius’ list was not the first by any means. The earliest surviving suggestion of what books should constitute Christian “scriptures” comes from a heretic – a man called Marcion – in AD 144. Marcion was vehemently anti-Semitic, so he omitted anything Jewish. That meant jettisoning the entire Old Testament and every Gospel except for Luke’s (and even then he edited bits out he didn’t like). He did include some letters of Paul (Paul was Greek, so that made him OK). But even though the wider church condemned Marcion, they refused to be rushed into providing an alternative list. They knew he was wrong, but they still hadn’t come to the final conclusion on what was right. There is a list called the Muratorian Canon, which includes the books that we know as the traditional New Testament, but scholars disagree on whether this list comes from AD 170 or much later.
