“Nicci!”

I jerked up from the face plant I had performed on my bed a few hours before. I groaned. I’d had more than just a few beers before the taxi had shown up and more than a few more when I got home.

In fact—I didn’t even know what time it was.

“Nicole!”

“What?!” I screamed, and instantly regretted it.

A set of feet came pounding down the stairs, and someone leaned in the doorway a moment later. I flopped my head around to look at who was there. Nick, my brother in law. “What do you want?” I asked, mumbling the words through the comforter.

“There was another Box Grater Rapist attack tonight. Your sister was panicking because you weren’t answering the phone.”

“No, I’m here. Still drunk, I think. Still miserable. Still not getting laid by a hot guy.”

Nick shook his head. “Jesus, Nicci. You’re getting lame with this, you know. Just use the vibrator I know that Morgan, Cece, Emmy, or one of those nuts gave you.”

I rolled over and stared at the ceiling. Yep. Still drunk. “Do you not get how much different it is when you have human contact? Guys can get an erection when the wind blows, and get off when the sun comes out. It’s not the same for women. Yes, BOB works just fine, but it’s not as much fun as when it’s with someone. Or apparently, some-ONES, tonight.”

“Plural?” He cocked his head.

“Date tried to trick me into a threesome.”

“Ooh. Damn. Well, look, kid. You can’t get drunk every time this doesn’t work out.”

“Nick, I haven’t been drunk in months. I can’t get drunk every time because I don’t want to screw up my school. I can’t show up drunk. This was just bad because I feel like I was really connecting with the guy and then his girlfriend is suddenly there, pawing me. No. I just need to get drunk this time.”

I propped myself up on my elbow to get a better look at Nick’s face.

“Do you want to know what really sucks about tonight? If Ben had been up-front about me being a third with his girlfriend, I would have gone along with it. I mean, I’ve kissed a girl and liked it before. I don’t think I would have had a problem with it.” I flopped back down off my elbow. “I just can’t deal with dishonesty.”

He frowned. “I’m sorry, Nicci. I wish I could help. But I’m fresh out of hot dudes who are respectable to hook you up with.” He sat down on the bed. “Nic, you’re my little sister too, and I love you. I see you working your ass off just as hard as your sister for what you want. But maybe you shouldn’t apply that to dating, or even getting a hookup. Maybe you should just relax, and see what happens without those stupid dating apps.”

I sighed. “Maybe.”
